Empowering Girls and Women Globally

G(irls)20 was the first social profit enterprise to advocate that female labour force participation (FLFP) be a key element of G20 priorities and actions. The G(irls)20 Summit brings together one delegate from each G20 country, plus a representative from the European and African Unions, the MENA region, Afghanistan and Pakistan. In keeping with the G20 Turkey Presidency, a delegate from Azerbaijan, Singapore and Spain will also join this year's Summit. While the G(irls)20 delegates discuss the same topics as the G20 Leaders, the participants are all girls, aged 18-23. The 6th G(irls)20 Summit will be held on October 5th & 6th, 2015 in Istanbul. The focus of the 2015 Summit is to respond to the 2014 G20 Leaders commitment to create 100 million new jobs for women by the year 2025.

Women Don't Want Privilege, They Want Equality

G(irls)20 brings together a group of carefully selected young women, "delegates", equips them with leadership and communication skills and gives them the opportunity to meet with leaders from government, business and civil society. This is an excellent way of empowering young women to help them realize their full potential.

STEM: It's a "Girl Thing," Too

Women make up over half of the world's population but only a third of engineering jobs across the globe are held by women. I believe this problem, like many others, is significantly centered on mindset and perceptions.

Do You Want to Change the World?

Why do we hold back? There are a billion excuses; someone told us we could never do that, our friends or family don't expect us to do that, fear that we wouldn't actually be good at it anyway, we can't afford it, we don't have the talent or training, etc. etc. This is not a blog on why we hold back. This is a blog about what we can do to let go of our fears.

In Canada, mental illness carries a cost to the economy of over $50 billion annually. The number of people missing work due to a mental illness is 500,000 on any given day. When people with mental illness work in supportive environments their quality of life improves.

Why Should Gender Matter When It Comes To Human Rights?

A female in my nation may state education as the most important right for her, but others may feel the right to clean drinking water, basic healthcare, or freedom from torture more pressing. The fact of the matter is that human rights are all important. All of them must be fought for, and, once gained, must be retained.

How G(irls)20 Hopes to End 'No Girls Allowed' In Classrooms

As schools start to fill up this fall, let us not forget about all the young women and girls who will not be sitting in a classroom of their own. Especially those girls who are denied education, forced into marriage at an early age, or simply deprived of educational resources.

South African Women Need Mental Liberation

The next step for South African women is mental liberation. More women should spend time deciding what they want, regardless of societal expectations, and put these plans into action. This can range from a top position professionally, or an escape from an abusive relationship.

Make Japan a Nation Where Women and Men Shine

It is widely acknowledged that Japan needs more females in business to make up for a shrinking workforce and to boost economic growth and opportunity. With this admirable goal in mind, we must work to make Japan a nation where every individual, male and female, has equal opportunities to realize their full social, economic and political potential. As a Japanese youth, I am not afraid to break from traditional practices and defy what is expected of me. I am ready to pursue my own dream to become a fearsome business leader and 2014 G(irls)20 Delegate representing Japan.

How to Make the World a Better Place

"The little girl wants to tell you something else. Please don't forget them. Please help them live in freedom." That urgent message, delivered by a translator as I was leaving a room in Kabul, Afghanistan, came from a 13-year-old Afghan girl.

Turning a Big Idea Into Global Change

What would happen if the world's 3.5 billion women set out to fix the biggest problems facing their communities? What Empowerment Means to Me

The word makes me feel strong. It allows me an element of control over my professional and personal life. It gives me the confidence to believe that I deserve to have the same opportunities as men. It holds me responsible and accountable for my own happiness and the direction that I take my life. It gives me the strength to refuse to be victimized.

The Country With the Most Women in Parliament? You Might Be Surprised

A quick quiz for you -- which country has: the most women in parliament? The largest number on boards? Drum roll -- Rwanda 63.8 per cent and Norway 40.6 per cent. So it seems that when it comes to leadership, the glass ceiling in the U.S. and U.K. isn't about to be shattered any time soon. But does this really matter? I think it does.

So You Want To Be A Leader?

Leadership is not a concept that exclusively applies to offices and organizations. Every human being is leading a life, a life full of immense potential and a unique promise for the world. As Mahatma Gandhi underscores, "Be the change you wish to see in the world."

What Australia Can Do For Women At The G20 Summit

I am excited to have the G20 Summit held in Australia this year because I believe this provides Australia with the opportunity to intensely scrutinize its own role in the world. While Australia in many respects is a wonderful country to live in, I believe that as a wealthy, prosperous nation, we still have a lot of work to do.
