Read this itinerary by VitaminDaily.com Editor-in-chief Sarah Bancroft first! Or, "How do you say umbrella stroller in French?"
DAY 1

Get your bearings with day passes for the BatoBus, sightseeing boats that stop every 15 minutes along the Seine so you can hop on and off at all the major monuments ($15 Euros/day). It's the best way to get the pretty and sprawling Jardins Des Plantes with its Menagerie (the oldest zoo in the world opened in 1794). Don't miss Nenette, the famous 40-year-old orangutan. Hint: if you go just before closing at 5, you can see the cats get fed whole chickens. Menagerie Du Jardins Des Plantes 9 Euros/7 Euros.

DAY 2

The L'Ouvre and Musee D'Orsay are for a different trip. To get your culture fix, head to the Centre Pompidou, the famous inside-out art gallery. The very best view of Paris is from its rooftop café (try the Vietnamese spring rolls) and there are lots of free activities for kids in and around the lobby and grounds, plus a great gift shop. www.centrepompidouparis.com

DAY 3

Hands down my favourite afternoon was spent at the stunning Jardins Luxemburg. Check out the art exhibits in its Orangerie, ponder the immaculate topiaries, and make sure to rent the affordable wooden boats (pictured) for your kids to play with in the main fountain. There is a pretty garden and wading pool just for kids under five, which makes a nice oasis for a picnic from nearby Le Petit Luxe (2 Rue de Vaugirard) which has inventive take-away salads and sandwiches for just 3 Euros (hence line-ups).

DAY 4

If your local science centre were designed by Philippe Starck and housed in a massive sculpture park, you are beginning to get a sense of the sheer scale and scope of Paris' Cite des Enfants. We wished we had a whole day to explore inside and out, but at the very least take them to the main science experiences where they can "work" in a water factory, play with a light wall, collaborate in a kiddie construction site and stimulate their growing grey matter. Cite Des Sciences, www.cite-sciences.fr

--Sarah Bancroft

PRACTICAL TIPS

Apps

Download the app GoGo Paris for great dining and shopping recommendations by neighbourhood, plus opening hours (very useful). www.gogoparis.com

Babysitting

Even the best parents deserve a date night in Paris. We used the babysitting service Baby Chou and met a wonderful English-speaking au pair named Aude. Ask for her! It is better to phone rather than book online. 9 Euros/hour plus agency fee. 01 43 65 58 58, www.babychou.com

Getting Around

Be prepared to carry strollers up and down Metro stairs and wait for grumpy attendants to open access doors beside the turnstiles. For shorter journeys, taxis are better (get a business card and reserve a "maxi cab" for your trip to the airport).

The "Sights"

Remember: the Eiffel Tower is best viewed from the park at its base, don't waste half a day dodging pickpockets in the lineups. Instead, take them to the Eiffel Tower Carousel, the prettiest in the city.

Dining

We found that picnicking in parks was better than trying to keep the steak knives and wine glasses out of tiny hands. Not to mention all the glares we avoided this way. If you have rented an apartment like we did, even better.

Money

Credit cards and online reservations are de rigeur, but you will find that your booking can't be retrieved with a foreign credit card. This applies to train tickets, museum passes, etc. Be prepared to line up.

Taxes

The 12 per cent VAT can add up. Make sure to carry your passport number and ask for a tax form at point of purchase. You can get the tax back in cash at the airport before you check in as long as you have your purchases on hand to present to them.

Bon Voyage!

Nestled among palms and Bougainvillea, Casa's swishiest private villas boast infinity pools, basketball courts and docks for one's yacht. Jay-Z rented something oceanfront for his 40th birthday (Queen B needs her space). No less sumptuous, our elite balcony suite had a cathedral ceiling and walk-in closet. Best of all, each room comes with its own golf carrito for getting to and fro. Arriba! eat

There are 13 gourmet eateries here and (hallelujah!) just one buffet. We spent most afternoons noshing on fresh seafood at the open-air Beach Club by Le Cirque. Overlooking Minitas Beach, the lobster salad and poached conch cocktails are delish. Do sea breezes smell better over mojitos made from hand-picked berries? Why yes they do.

shop

A short hop from the main resort, Altos de Chavón has a charming cache of boutiques with handspun carpets, embroidered linens and artisanal pottery. At Jenny Polanco we fell for hand-painted clutch bags and pretty lace-trimmed dresses. The village is also home to The School of Design (an outpost of Parsons). Ask to visit the library where a collection of vintage leather-bound Vogues will put a gleeful dent in your beach time.
Riding the range is glorious until you discover muscles you never knew existed. For your sins, the spa's polo stretching massage is just the thing. We loved that treatment products are 100 percent natural and made on site. Follow up with a turn in the meditation garden labyrinth and you might get back on the horse.
Stay
Yes, the amenity-free Shelter is kind of in the middle of nowhere, but it's also smack dab in the middle of the downtown, Silver Lake and West Hollywood triangle, all of which are a few minutes' drive away. Plus, it's as cheap as can be. From $96/night.

Eat
Don't let the smoke in the air, the "B" health rating or the lack of atmosphere turn you off. The marinated steak and spicy tofu stew makes Soot Bull Jeep the kind of place A-listers hide out in when they don't want to be recognized. 3136 W. Eigth Ave., Los Angeles, 213-387-3865.

Laura Cropper of VitaminDaily.com visits Spain's Castilla y León region, which is home to more medieval castles than anywhere else in Europe. Segovia -- 30 minutes North of Madrid via high-speed train -- is this area's crown with scenic castles, cathedrals and palaces. It's like a fairytale come to life.

Stay
For a truly authentic experience, stay in a Parador. Paradors are Spanish state-run hotels that have been converted from historic buildings like convents, castles or palaces. The Parador de la Granja is housed in the 18th-century palace that was used by Charles III for Princes Gabriel and Antonio.

Eat
Manchego, Jamón ibérico and morcilla (blood sausage) are regional specialties. Sorry vegans! Roast suckling pig, or "conchinillo asado," is the most famous Segovian dish. The meat is so tender that it is traditionally cut tableside with a dinner plate. Our favorite was at Mesón de Cándido, a Spanish Inn founded in 1786.

Drink
Sangria, what else? Throw a rock anywhere in Segovia's Plaza Mayor and you are bound to hit a pretty patio with a spectacular view. If you prefer your wine with less fruit, Tempranillo is a good bet in this region. And, if you want to wander around with a drink in hand, ask for yours "para llevar" (to go).

Explore
The Alcázar de Segovia is one of the most recognizable and beautiful castles in Spain. Walt Disney thought so too -- the Alcázar served as a key inspiration for the iconic Cinderella castle.

Do
The Catedral de Santa María is not to be missed! Literally. It is massive, so really, you can't miss it. The cathedral was built starting in 1525, making it the last Gothic-style cathedral to be built in Spain. The interior is ornate but light and bright, and it's one of the most beautiful I've visited.

See
Segovia's Roman aqueduct is one of the most important and well-preserved ancient monuments in Spain. It is the symbol of Segovia, and it is also one of the many reasons the town is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visit
Palacio Real de La Granja is an 18th-century baroque palace, located 15 minutes outside of Segovia. Visit at dusk, when most of the turistas have left, and there is a beautiful dappled glow cast over the extensive French-style gardens. You can still make it back to Segovia in time to watch the sun set over the Alcázar.

Don't forget the mittens!

Stay

The Four Seasons Resort Whistler is incredibly kid-friendly, with plush bears and owls offered upon check-in, free games and movies to borrow for snowy nights, and pint-sized slippers and robes for trips to the hot tubs. Not only do kids under five eat for free in the hotel restaurant, there are also programs in peak season where kids can make s'mores in the fire pits or create pizza with the chefs in the hotel kitchen (offered on-the-house). Did we mention the custom cookies, iced with our kids' names, waiting in the room? Hey, what about us poor adults?

Stop in Squamish on your way up to Whistler...

Do

Eagle-watching in Brackendale, "Winter Home of the Bald Eagle." These giant birds arrive in December and hang around for a few months to feast on fish. Go to the Brackendale Dyke, off Government Road, for some great spotting and free use of telescopes on weekends. But be careful of salmon road kill, the birds like to drop the remains in unexpected places. Find a map here.

Ride

The Polar Express is a train ride departing from the West Coast Railway Station. A 50 minute ride (including a stop for hot chocolate and cookies), followed by a trip to the "North Pole" complete with visits to Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Expect to spend two hours enjoying this magical trip. To buy tickets for December 1-2 or 8-9 ($24-$39) visit http://www.wcra.org

Warm up and eat

Howe Sound Brewery has a restaurant that accommodates kids and their beer-connoisseur parents. Try the beer battered fries poutine ($10) and the locally-made Christmas Ale, made from four different malts and a blend of spices ($6.50 a pint). http://www.howesound.com/
Stock up on local wine and olive oil at Vinoteka Bornstein (pictured), where you're bound to pick up an education in Croatian wine from the expert owners while you shop. For a purchase that'll last longer, visit gallery Likum to browse the selection of Croatian art. Fragrance addicts will want to pop around the corner to the Institut Parfumeur Flores, the country's first niche parfumerie, which sells scents from more than 90 brands as well as other products that, well, smell good.
Head up the funicular to the upper town and two small but must-see museums. The Croatian Museum of Naive Art showcases local and international artists of this so-called "primitive" -- but beyond gorgeous - style of untrained artists. Down the street, the uber-creative Museum of Broken Relationships collects objects and stories from the world's love affairs gone wrong, like this red coat once received as a gift - "I never really cared for red," the caption tells us.
caffeinate

Zagreb's patio scene is crowded with umbrella-shaded tables and chairs where you can order local favourite kava sa šlagom -- espresso with whipped cream. But for the city's best coffee - the New York Times said so! -- be sure to stop in at microroastery and espresso bar Eliscaffe, which even has locally scarce takeout cups and whose owner prepared us the perfect cappuccino while singing the praises of Toronto's coffee scene. How could we help but love him?

We at VitaminDaily.com have created a series of useful and unique family travel itineraries. Each one is tried, tested and true by an editor (and mom). This week, Maria Tallarico explores Portland.

Portland is my family's city-away-from-the-city, and we make the five hour drive from Vancouver often. It's extremely kid-friendly -- even at the brewpub!

Stay
We always bunk at the Paramount: clean, spacious rooms, helpful staff and a stone's throw to all of our favourite spots in the city (including Nordstroms, just around the corner). Request a room with a balcony on the second floor. 808 SW Taylor St.; www.portlandparamount.com

Play
Director Park is the big-city answer to public space, a spacious, clean piazza with a café (the outdoor bistro tables are lovely), a giant chess set, an unofficial waterpark and tons of spacious, shaded seating. If the weather has forced you indoors, head to old-time toy shop Finnegan's for some playtime and classic toys (try explaining a slinky to your kid). Finnegan's, 820 SW Washington St.; www.finneganstoys.com

Eat
You could eat six meals a day in Portland and never be disappointed. The food truck scene is famous for a reason: the options are cheap, delicious and fresh, with an abundance of trucks parked in one area for easy access. For a sit-down meal, I love casual and contemporary Southpark: the oysters are fresh and the corn risotto is a tasty take on contemporary food. Southpark, 901 SW Salmon St.; http://southparkseafood.com

Drink
Portland has one of the most prominent craft brew scenes in the world and the bustling brewpubs to match. Deschutes is a favorite -- expect a fair line for a table on the weekend -- but waiting is much easier with a Black Butte in hand (hey, that stroller cup holder comes in handy!). Yes, kids are welcome (last time we were there half the tables had kids, from breastfeeding newborn to an eight-year-old's birthday party). 210 NW 11th Ave.; www.deschutesbrewery.com

Shop
This no-tax haven is the place to splurge on big purchases. This year, I bought almost my entire fall wardrobe in Portland, including a Vince sweater coat with leather trim at Nordstroms, LNA tops and 7 for all Mankind Gwenevere jeans from Nordstroms Rack, plus Rachel Comey boots from lovely boutique Frances May, which stocks upscale casual wear lines like ALC, Vena Cava and Suno. Frances May, 1013 SW Washington St.; www.francesmay.com

Read
In one of the few cities where independent bookshops thrive, Powell's is the granddaddy of hardcovers, packed to the risers with books both new and used. You could easily spend an afternoon exploring the different floors and deep collections; we buy my son a classic book on each visit. 1005 W. Burnside St. and 4 other locations; www.powells.com

Just an easy 90-minute train ride from London, VitaminDaily.com 's Kat Tancock explores the charming, compact and walkable city of Bath - former home to Jane Austen, among others - which offers a perfect day trip or weekend getaway.

Stay

We adored boutique B&B Villa Magdala, across from lovely Henrietta Park (opened to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee) and just steps from Bath's downtown. You'll want to stay more than one night - or bring a big appetite - to sample the delightful breakfast menu, with fruit, yogurt and pastries plus to-order picks like the full English and our favourite, the lemon-ricotta-pistachio pancakes. www.villamagdala.co.uk

Dine

Book ahead and bring a group to sample Tilleys Bistro's tasty tapas menu, complete with clearly labelled veg and gluten-free selections. Our French Farmers Salad, Baked Avocado Tower and Butterbean and Root Ginger Firepot went down so well (accompanied by a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc) that we tragically left no room for dessert. http://www.tilleysbistro.co.uk

Do

Bath is home to the UK's only natural hot springs, put on the map by the Romans, who erected a full bathing complex complete with temple. A visit to the Roman Baths Museum is a must while in town. Wander the site with the audio guide and turn up your imagination to visualize the lives of the people who millennia ago bathed in these same waters. If you have time, pick up a combo ticket to save on a trip to the Fashion Museum, too.

Relax

You can't enter the original Roman baths, unfortunately, but there is a consolation prize across the street: Thermae Bath Spa, which taps into those same natural springs. Sample the selection of scented steam rooms, then soak in the rooftop pool and enjoy the views of Bath Abbey and the rest of the city. www.thermaebathspa.com

Photo: visitbath.co.uk Copyright: Bath Tourism

Shop

Bath has no shortage of boutiques and other shopping pleasures. Make sure to visit historic Pulteney Bridge, a late-18th-century stone bridge complete with built-in shops. One highlight for us was the Antique Map Shop, with its very giftable collection of printed maps from all over the world.

In Bermuda, houses are painted sherbert yellow, green and blue and the pinkish sand on every beach is as soft as flour. If you're planning a winter getaway, consider Bermuda, where the sweet floral scents and sounds of the sea will whisk you a million miles away.

Stay

With three restaurants, pools, tennis courts and spacious rooms all steps away from one of the island's best beaches, Elbow Beach is the place to stay. Order a Dark and Stormy and bask on the beach to a soundtrack of crashing waves. Sushi fans will love the fresh-from-the-ocean wahoo rolls at Seabreez. www.mandarinoriental.com/bermuda
Do

Rent a moped and cruise the island at 25 miles-per-hour. Visit the flamingos at the local aquarium, stop and smell the hibiscus at the Botanical Gardens and leap off the cliffs into crystal waters at Horseshoe Bay. If you're as nosy as we are, you'll want to ride over to Tucker's Town where Ross Perot, Michael Bloomberg and Silvio Berlusconi have holiday homes.

Eat

The Lobster Pot in town is a Bermudian institution where bibs are a must. Don't miss out on the Guinea Chicks (Sept-March) and if you've never tried Wahoo, this is the place to do it. www.lobsterpot.bm

Drink

Chat up some locals (Bermudians are famously friendly) over a few Rum Swizzles (made with Bermuda rum) at the local mainstay Rum Swizzle Inn. www.swizzleinn.com
