People forgot how to have fun. My mission is to make this Nation healthier One Fit City at a time. Add a little fun to functional training, and introduce regular people to sport specific training and we have a recipe for success. Done smart, and over time, we can turn this nation into aspiring athletes(or at least healthier arm chair quarterbacks). A degree in Kinesology and Applied Health and work with everything from Couch Potatoes Pro Athletes over the past decade is my key to battling Obesity and Inactivity.
If you struggle with your weight or if you are stuck in a routine that has you emotionally drained, understand you are not alone. Also understand that an entire industry has been created to sell you products, diets and fad workouts that you just don't need and, usually, don't work.
Canada Summer Games is about to descend on Winnipeg. In less than 90 days, Winnipeg will be the site of more than 4000 athletes performing to their very best. It was my thought that all those athletes, friends and families would probably like an insiders guide to the city. You know, best restaurants to refuel, places to relax, shopping areas to kill time, and of course resources for athletes to get a competitive edge.
A moment of weakness in agreeing to foster the little monster has shaped how I now talk about health. Gracie is a half border collie and half husky; that's the educated guess, but no one actually know for certain. Gracie was thrown out of a car window with her litter mates; that's about all we know about her start to life.
If you've ever set out to lose 10 pounds, I've got an idea for you to actually do it. Be careful, though, this will change your life, and it's pretty simple. All you need to do is cut 35,000 calories from your life, and we will get there.
What if we came back around to something simple? Our goal needs to be to eat real food for what it does for our energy, immune function, and cellular function. The gym should be seen as one of many tools to build strength and get exercise.
What is it with society's obsession with getting rid of fat? Books, supplements, and countless TV shows are aimed at one topic, getting rid of fat. What's wrong with having body fat? We scientifically know that some body fat is good. Not just some, we scientifically know the percentages that are safe and healthy for men and women.
Here is what really concerns me -- it's infected my social media feed. Instagram is full of half naked fitness models of both genders, all fighting for my attention by showing as much skin as possible. If they are in my feed, chances are they are in your feed, and worse yet, they are in your kids feed.
It feels like it's impossible to eat healthily. Once you've decided to eat carbohydrates or not, a super fruit is found. If you track down the superfruit, you need to know if it's GMO on Non-GMO. Or maybe you should become vegan and figure out what has animal products or not.
Food has become what makes us fat or skinny -- acceptable levels of fat or skinniness are determined by sex appeal, not by doctors, physiologists or experts in health. We hand select beautiful people who won a genetics lottery, put them on a pedestal in social media, TV and magazines. We covet their qualities, and then we blame bread when we are fatter than them.
Exercise, active living and healthy eating are not the first step in living a healthy lifestyle. The base needs to be set before anyone can live a healthy lifestyle. This is the problem -- most people are not equipped to live healthy. Education is important to health, and more than anything, mental health is critical.
If you are going to make the "be healthy" resolution, let me help you with a few thoughts. Make the resolution something you can absolutely make happen. Here's four simple ways to make 2016 a healthy year, and 2017, and all the years to follow.
What are we doing to ourselves? When it comes to health promotion, why do we insist on beating ourselves up about appearance? It has nothing to do with health, and we make it the foundation of everything we do that is health related.
If you want to be healthy, and you work for a large corporation answer me this. Do you use your benefits package? If you want to get ahead at work, use your benefits program. The healthier and more energetic you are, the better your performance.
The season to gain weight is on us. We live in a world where there is an app to help, but no phone or gadget can do the work for us. You still have to move in order to be healthy, and you still have to say no to overeating all the time in order to have a optimally healthy body.
We have made body image more important than body function. You can be healthy, beautiful and happy at any size. You can be unhealthy and unhappy at any size as well. If our children hear us say all that matters is health, but see us with fitness magazines on our coffee tables and weight-loss products in our cupboards, what message do they really get?
What if we all started going outside again? We live in one of the most beautiful, natural playgrounds in the world. We are lucky to have the freedom to explore, play, and interact with nature for the...
We have people avoiding certain foods because of the result it has on the scale. We stopped making diet about prevention of cancer, health, and the basics of being alive. Food doesn't make you skinny or fat, it simply ensures your cells and your body have energy and the basic building blocks to reproduce.
I truly believe that the offer to awaken ones soul with exploration, and the discovery of new cultures and the experience of immersion in something brand new will get people to live healthy. To truly live for the moment. Nothing inspires me to go out and be active like the thought of climbing Machu Picchu in South America.
