The Best Video Games Of 2016

We're deep enough into the current generation of consoles that developers are focused more on building worlds than figuring out the tech, resulting in some great games.

Racist 'Alt-Right' Snowflakes Boycott Rogue One Because 2016

The so-called alt-right may soon have their Emperor in the White House, but before they got political to help force Donald Trump into the presidency, the movement was largely focused on fomenting culture wars. So it's hardly a "Luke, I am your father" surprise twist that the alt-right is now targeting "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (which, by the way, is really, really good.)

Rogue One Gives Star Wars Fans A New Hope

Review: Rest assured, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits its target like the filmmakers were Luke Skywalker bullseyeing womp rats in his T-16 back home on Tatooine. That's not just a too-clever comparison, either. Many have preemptively called this new Stars Wars film superfluous. Admittedly, this darker-hued, smaller-scale tale of bravery during wartime is arguably not a necessary addition to the canon for casual fans who don't care about filling in plot points. But the movie is far more than its functional linkage between the two completed trilogies.

A Nazi By Any Other Name Must Still Be Stopped

Many Trump supporters on both sides of the border are trying to diminish these hate crimes, dismiss the alt-right and excuse the president-elect. The goal is normalization. But this is more than not normal. It is familiar. And it is contagious. First Brexit, then Trump, and next it could be Front National's racist leader Marine Le Pen in France. Call it alt-right, white supremacy, white nationalism, ethno-nationalism or whatever else you want. It's just Nazi by another name and we must stand up to it because we've seen how this story ends.

Wake Up, Trump Just Put A White Nationalist In The White House

There have been many calls to better understand the white working class voter and placing blame on "political correctness" for what Van Jones dubbed on election night "a whitelash." In other words, that the real problem was that we weren't paying enough attention to straight, white people and shouldn't have been calling for diversity, equality and respect. But arguing that if you just didn't challenge straight white male supremacy then they wouldn't have elected a straight white male supremacist is no different than blaming a rape victim for what she wore, or a gay-bashing victim for kissing his boyfriend, or a Jew for wearing a Star of David necklace.

Leonard Cohen Was Our Beating Heart Of Darkness

As a cultural presence that combined the sacred and profane, romance and cynicism, humanity and hopelessness for over five decades of towering songs, we all have our own Leonard Cohen entry point. Like fellow Canadian Neil Young, Cohen became a patron saint of the 90s alternative nation. There was the tribute album "I'm Your Fan" and placement of "Closing Time and, especially, "The Future" in the film "Natural Born Killers."
