Rona Ambrose

Minister of Public Works and Government Services

As Minister of Public Works and Government Services, the Honourable Rona Ambrose has been working on new and innovative ways to leverage procurement with a focus on supporting Canadian industry and creating jobs in Canada. During her tenure, Minister Ambrose has also decreased the average time needed for major procurements by five years, which benefits Canadian industry and the Canadian taxpayer.

Minister Ambrose has made improving the transparency, accountability and fairness of the procurement process one of her top priorities. When the Government of Canada made the historic decision to build the Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard fleets in Canada, it was under Minister Ambrose’s leadership that the Government of Canada developed and implemented the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy. This strategy ensured that process used to award the $35 billion in contracts was fair, independent and merit-based.

First elected as a Member of Parliament in 2004, Minister Ambrose was re-elected in 2006, 2008 and 2011. In February 2006, she was appointed Minister of the Environment and in January 2007, she was named Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification. Following the 2008 election, she was named Minister of Labour as well as minister responsible for northern Alberta. In January 2010, Ms. Ambrose became Minister of Public Works and Government Services, and in April 2010, she was also named Minister for Status of Women.

Prior to serving in Parliament, Ms. Ambrose worked in the Government of Alberta's Department of International and Intergovernmental Relations. She has also worked in the private sector as a public policy consultant.

Her community service has included involvement in organizations working to end violence against women, including the Status of Women's Action Group, the Victoria Sexual Assault and Sexual Abuse Crisis Centre, and the Edmonton Women's Shelter.

Ms. Ambrose holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Victoria and a master's degree in Political Science from the University of Alberta.

The Right Planes at the Right Price

The Harper government is committed to examining all options in replacing Canada's CF-18 fleet. We will not purchase a replacement aircraft until our seven-point plan is complete. This process is being overseen by a non-partisan Secretariat with an independent expert panel.

Government Gave Us International Girl Child Day

The statistics are grim, leaving little room for doubt on why an international day to focus on girls' issues is significant and necessary. Girls are three times more likely to be malnourished than boys. Sex selection feticide denies millions of girls the right to be born merely because they are girls.
