When times get tough, history shows that dedicated funds can be quickly undedicated. California's only the latest example in a long history of governmental abuse of dedicated funds. This is one area where Al Gore may have had things right: Sometimes, you really do wish for a lock box.

Has Your Child Seen This Propaganda Film in School?

Recently, a concerned parent pointed me to a film being shown to his child's sixth grade class, called The Story of Stuff. The movie, created in 2007, depicts a world in which big corporations, in cahoots with big government, pretty much destroy the entire planet and maliciously poison the environment for their own filthy ends. This is merely one example of how The Story of Stuff misleads.

Nigeria's a Mess -- But Don't Blame the Oil

The tragedy in Nigeria is less about the oil itself than it is about failed governance. Without radical improvements in public policy, Nigeria will continue to be a poor destination for investment. That's bad for everyone. But don't blame the petroleum for the problems there -- blame the public policy.
