Your Police Officer is not Your Therapist

The Ontario Government has announced they will review how the police respond to the mentally ill. This latest concern about an age-old problem has resulted from a number of fatal shootings involving the police and people with mental illness in Toronto. The police are not mental health professionals and they should not be expected to spend as much time as they do dealing with sick people.

Vincent Li is the infamous Greyhound bus beheader who has been sent to a mental health facility in Manitoba after being found not criminally responsible for his actions because of an untreated mental illness. There are a significant number of people with serious mental illness who, because of their illness like Li, are incapable of recognizing that they are ill.
