James Q. Wilson: R.I.P.

Political scientist James Q. Wilson passed away today at the age of 80. Wilson is known for co-authoring one of the most influential articles on policing practices in the last century: "Social psychologists and police officers tend to agree that if a window in a building is broken and is left unrepaired, all the rest of the windows will soon be broken."

Newmarket is one of the fastest growing cities in Ontario. Unfortunately, they've now run out of room to grow. Like many other cities, it has no choice but to grow upwards. The trouble is that some local residents are resisting high-density development. What they don't realize is that thanks to the provincial government, they don't have a choice in the matter.

Perhaps the most controversial aspect of the budget was the decision to increases various medical fees. Ultimately, the budget delivered yesterday won't break the bank -- assuming the government's fiscal projections are correct. This budget nudges the province in the right direction. But it leaves something to be desired.

The Budget Goes West

From the perspective of the three westernmost provinces, there were some promising measures in the latest budget: Outside pressure from over-zealous environmentalists and the current regulatory framework threaten to undermine productivity in the resource sector. The budget attempts to streamline the process. It also attempts to help with Western labor shortage through immigration reform.
