Jewish Resolve: Drawing Strength from Yom Kippur

Posted: 10/07/11 10:02 AM ET

As on Yom Kippur of 1973, Jewish communities around the world -- and Israel in particular, are facing an external threat of historic proportion.

It was 38 years ago that a consortium of Arab states launched a surprise attack on Israel on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), the holiest and most solemn day of the year for the Jewish people. It was a sadistic attack, timed to happen when Jews in Israel would have their guard down -- in synagogue, with all communications closed (no electricity or fire is permissible) and likely weak and tired from fasting.

But Jewish resolve and the need for survival was greater than the hatred unleashed on the tiny state by Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Iraq with troops and aid from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Pakistan, Sudan, Morocco, Cuba and Yasser Arafat's Palestine Liberation Organization. Many nations further participated in attempting to destroy Israel by funding and supplying this war effort -- including the former Soviet Union through its alliance with Egypt and Arab states.

Israel was victorious and for many Jews today, Yom Kippur is more than just a day of private reflection and atonement. It is a day of Jewish pride and strength, and an expression of our resolve and effort to survive in our ancestral homeland despite the incredible suffering our people have endured throughout the ages.

And because Yom Kippur is a holiday that brings Jews together and fills synagogues around the world to the rafters, it is a holiday that unifies us and recommits us and strengthens us for the coming year. This re-strengthening of our commitment to Israel and our culture and religion was indeed the secret weapon the Arabs missed in 1973 when they launched their attack.

The enemies of Israel and the Jewish people should know that our resolve today is greater than it was even on Yom Kippur in 1973. When we say that never again will there be a Holocaust and the gathering of millions of Jews into concentration camps where they will be gassed -- or annihilated by Gazan bombs or a nuclear Iran, we are serious. Israel does not stand alone -- not among Diaspora Jews and not among Western nations like Canada who rightly understand that Israel is the defender of freedom and democracy in the Middle East.

For today, we bear witness to a 'gang up on Israel and the Jewish people' mentality heretofore unseen in history -- for there has never before been such a convergence of technology and communication combined with such a seething hatred for the Jewish people under the guise of anti-Zionism. It is unconscionable and immoral that any religious minority on this planet -- and there are only 13 million of us -- is continuously attacked by a consortium of 52 Islamic Conference states at the United Nations. The Iranian president regularly and publicly calls for Israel's destruction; Hamas continues to shoot rockets at Israel even as the Palestinians demand a state -- but not peace, while the wanna-be leader of a new Islamic caliphate -- Turkey, is complicit in sending a flotilla to break the Gaza blockade (and subsequently demanding an apology from Israel for daring to defend itself).

Like Yom Kippur of 1973, we are in an emergency situation -- one that we must not leave again to chance and illusion. While Israel's enemies continue to plan war against the state or fund terrorism from a distance, others are warring against Israel from across continents. In Canada, for example, money was raised to fund a flotilla to Gaza this summer; at the end of August, an Arab group commemorating 'al-Quds Day' at Queens Park (Ontario's legislature) turned the celebration into a venom-laced protest by referring to Israel as a "cancer," and asserting that all troubles in the world are the fault of Jews. A woman presented by protest organizers as a representative of the United Church of Canada was there in support of this monstrous hate speech.

You may wonder how this could be allowed to happen -- not in Palestinian town of Ramallah, but in Toronto. The truth is that anti-Semitism (disguised as anti-Israelism) has become permissible on our university campuses, at gay pride weeks and in large unions like the Canadian Union of Public Employees -- Ontario and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. When the world's oldest mental illness (anti-Semitism) entrenches itself in institutions, it becomes acceptable in the public sphere as well.

The examples of Israel and Jewish hatred are numerous and slowly seeping into mainstream narrative. Statements questioning Israel's right to exist are routinely given a pass -- most recently in a CBC Radio interview when a Palestinian representative was permitted to state -- unchallenged, that Israel has been occupying Palestinian land since 1948. Anti-Israel activists like George Galloway, who speaks of Hezbollah terrorist Hassan Nasrallah (whose hatred of Jews could rival Hitler's) in glowing terms, is given a hero's welcome on university campuses across the country, while the Boycott Israel movement has filtered down to your local public library: Vancouver just hosted a meeting at one such publicly funded facility designed to encourage literacy, not hate. And just this past weekend, a group called for a boycott of the Jerusalem String Quartet's performance in Vancouver.

The Ottawa Protocol against Anti-Semitism just signed last month is evidence enough of how serious and concerning this issue is in Canada and around the world. Why else would a government and individual parliamentarians (who volunteered their time) spend more than two years studying and reporting on the assault on Canadian Jews? Canadians should be thankful to each and every parliamentarian involved from the three leading parties for recognizing this growing menace, acting upon it and providing a precedent for other nations to follow.

Yet despite these challenges, Israel will continue to grow and blossom as a Jewish state. We have learned to stand up to those who wish we would disappear and to those who would do their utmost to make that happen. We are a people that has stood the test of time. Having just marked the year 5772 calendar year on Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year), we are one of the oldest living religions known to humanity. And once again, this Saturday we will be renewing our commitment, our pride and our strength to our legacy.

if the U.S. stopped funding Israel and stopped their unwavering, almost zombie like, support of Israel, vetoing all UN resolutions that come up before the UN security council, israel might be forced to properly and honestly negotiate with its neighbours for a long and lasting peace

instead the author of this article bangs the drums of war and violence on Yom Kippur - the day of atonement - i don't hear much 'atoning' in his article

Mr. Benlolo - thank you for an inspiring article, especially at the High Holidays... Your words seemed to touch same raw nerves with Israel haters, it just shows that your statements are true and from the heart…. Otherwise all these people would not spend so much time trying to rebuttal you. good job.

This author put his honesty and sincerity (assuming he had any to begin with ) in serious jeopardy by pretending that event of 1973 happened in a total vacuum. He leaves out the impact and the consequences of historical event of 1945 , 1948 , 1967 and does not let the fact to get on his way. He cherry picks his facts , presents his opinion as fact and draws his conclusions and apparently if anyone dare to disagree with him he is automatically antisemitic and needs to be charged with a crime and if that is not a crime yet, government of Canada s obligated to get on board make it opposition to his view a crime.Wow,, nice piece of writing ....

The Yom Kippur war was fought against the IDF in the occupied territories, not Israel. The countries involved were trying to regain their land seized in 1967.

For the vast majority of the the world, and for most Palestinians for that matter, the main beef they have with Israel is the illegal settlements, and the occupation that is solely necessary to maintain them and help them grow.

This is a violation of international law (the Geneva Convention, as found by the US state department) and the violation of the human rights of millions of people. When the settlements are gone, Israel will have peace an acceptance. If they never existed, this conflict would have been over decades ago.

Viva Palestine.

bounced01 -- that is not a beef, as there is no basis for that claim, Samaria and Judea were never pals land, it was part of Ottoman, British rules then in 1948 was captured by the Jordanians... so were that came from?

You failed to mention Sadat's peace initiative, made just prior to the attack, which had proposed a full Israeli withdrawal to the pre-67 borders in exchange for a non-belligerency pact. You also failed to point out that it was Ramadan. The world looks so much more simple when viewed through an idealistic garden hose.

I watched a documentary by "Russia Today", and viewed how the Israelis harassed and mistreated the Palestinians there. The Israeli soldiers kept children from going home to their parents. I really do not care what your religion is about. If Israel wants Hebron, then make a deal, and stop the settlements. The video was disgusting to watch and shameful for Israel.

I also highly recommend the Israeli documentary "Defamation", which has won a number of awards. The Israeli documentary maker talks about how Israeli papers report massive antisemitism around the world, so he goes in search of it. The results will surprise many. Also he makes a perfect fool of Abe Foxman. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BwJOehf1Xo

Thank you for this article, Mr. Benlolo.

Just to strengthen your points: while Israel-haters continue to hate (oh, well...), yet another Israeli scientist has been awarded a Nobel Prize.

Prof. Daniel Shechtman of the Technion (Haifa's Technological Institute) has won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, forcing even Al-Jazeera to acknowledge (grudgingly -- and throwing a few distortions for good measure) his work.

Meanwhile, in a completely different area -- a new luxury hotel has been opened in Israel's Negev desert (www.time.com/time/travel/article/0,31542,2095600,00.html).
It is needed: in 2010, circa 3.5 million tourists (including myself) have visited Israel from overseas. A significantly higher number is expected this year.

Enjoy!

That is wonderful that a Nobel prize was awarded to an Israeli professor, Israelis should be smart enough to figure out their policies are not working. by continuing the occupation they have created another generation of Palestinians who are deprived of opportunity trapped behind a wall. What a waste of resources for the world, concrete, monetary and human.

Judging by their achievements, it certainly looks like Israelis ARE smart enough.

Hence, there are two possibilities:
- Either Israelis are (for some strange reason) smart enough in everything BUT politics; or
- They are actually smart enough and know what they're doing -- but you guys aren't smart enough or honest enough to understand that.

I will not express an opinion about that -- let each person choose the more likely alternative for him/herself...

This inflamatory article is the distilled essense of Zionism and its proponents.

It focuses of the wars that Israel has fought without any apparent consciousness of the underlying land grab that is the cause of the conflict. For when CBC had the audacity to allow a Palestinian representative to mention it in an interview ("unchallenged," no less), it is reflexively dismissed as "Jewish hatred."

This is why the Zionist narrative is such a hinderance to peace. It actively promotes an intentional blindness to the displacement of an indigenous population. It ignores the reality of ghettos and open-air prisons that have followed for those it displaced.

It compounds such sin by ignoring their plight for over 60 years, and engaging in their further displacement by building more and more settlements.

But when decades of frustration boil over into rage, the Zionist narrative's blindness to such displacement conveniently allows them to play the victim.

This is not to excuse the violence, but to point out the dangers of such blindness promoted by the Zionist narrative.

In order to find a solution, one must properly identify the causes of the conflict. We will not acheive peace by ignoring (or belittling) the legitimate grievances of the dispossesed.

The self-righteous hubris of some Zionists is simply unbecoming, especially with their being the cause of the conflict in the first place.

And your point of view exemplifies the hatred of Jews that is so prevalent in the Middle East -- indeed, it is taught in the schools and mosques. Your point of view has caused war, death, and destruction, mostly on the Arab side. You need to process the fact that the Arabs will NEVER regain all of the Holy Land. Will you stand up and accept the State of Israel as a Jewish state? Or will you continue on the path of war?
12:21 AM on 10/08/2011
While I may not agree with the underlying point of view of Ibn Rushd, he definitely didn't have any hatred in his post, he was simply saying what he thought about the way the Jewish narrative affects the larger dialogue.....I support Israel in its right to exist as a Jewish state and act to defend itself (up to a point as any rational person should agree), but I have to ask, why do so many Israel supporters have to be small-minded dicks?

Again, another failure of an article by benLOLo. Your entire article is based on the premise that anti-zionism = anti-semitism.

Again the two are not the same, unless you are stating that anti-zionist JEWS and their allies are all anti-semitic, which is simply an insult to all intelligent and conscientious objectors to israel's occupation of palestinian lands.

Thank goodness huffpo is not a newspaper, or this article would have been a poor waste of paper.....

Sir: Your commentary is replete with misinformation. However, given the limited space, I will confine my comment to the following:

"It was 38 years ago that a consortium of Arab states launched a surprise attack on Israel on Yom Kippur...."

Wrong!! The Arab states of Egypt and Syria (hardly a "consortium") did not launch a surprise attack on "Israel" in 1973. In fact, they launched an attack of liberation against ISRAELI TROOPS who were belligerently, illegally and brutally occupying Egyptian and Syrian lands as a result of the war that Israel had launched on 5 June 1967. Both Syrian and Egyptian forces confined their hostilities to their own sovereign lands under Israeli occupation.
04:46 PM on 10/07/2011
So true. The common mythology is that Arabs have always attacked Israel first, when the truth is that Israel fired the first shot in all its aggressive, expansionist wars. Even Israel's former prime minister aka chief terrorist, Menachim Begin, admitted that there was no existential threat to Israel in 1973. It is a little known fact that Israel threatened to use its nuclear weapons in 1973 unless Nixon provided Israel with the advanced conventional weaponry it demanded.

I also am disgusted with the constant conflation between anti-zionism and anti-semitism. These new hate speech laws are designed with the sole purpose of equating any criticism of Israel with anti-semitism.
