Chantal Hébert is a national political affairs columnist for the Toronto Star and a weekly guest columnist in Le Devoir. She is a regular guest on the “At Issue” political panel on CBC Television’s The National. The author of French Kiss: Stephen Harper’s Blind Date with Quebec, Hébert was the 2006 recipient of the Hyman Solomon Award for Excellence in Public Policy Journalism. Her book, written with Jean Lapierre, The Morning After: The 1995 Quebec Referendum and the Morning that Almost Was, is nominated for the Writers' Trust Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing.

The pollsters who had been tracking the vote for the pro-sovereignty side as referendum day approached were as categorical as they could be. The lead that the Yes camp had built since mid-campaign had held over the final weekend before the Monday vote. As long as the well-oiled sovereignist machine got the vote out, the Yes camp would have a rendezvous with history that very night.
