In Hospital Waiting Rooms, I Learned to Never Ask

I've been in so many oncology waiting rooms -- in Victoria, Vancouver, Ottawa and Toronto. The first time I was in one was in Victoria a few days after I found out I had cancer. I was 19 years old and blindsided. My best friend and my mom were with me. I tried my best to act nonchalant, to crack jokes. I've learned You don't ask. You never ask. Because the answer never makes sense.
