Mistake In First Harry Potter Book Could Fill Your Gringotts Vault With A Fortune

(22) Comments | Posted August 11, 2016 | 9:57 AM

If you have a first edition of the first Harry Potter book, you better run and turn to page 53 right now.

Don't worry, we'll wait.

Ok, are you there? Get ready for some good news, if you're lucky: According to The Sun, if you own an original hardback copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, you could be sitting on around £20,000. (That's almost $34,000 CAD to fill up your vault in Gringotts!)

Here's what to look for: the page contains a minor mistake, and it's thought that only around 500 copies have this. Can you spot it?

The error can be found in the list of items required to attend Hogwarts — "1 wand" is listed twice!

"As the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has a special place in the affections of the millions of readers across the world and the proof reading error about the wand in the first edition has, of course, become a treasured piece of Harry Potter arcana," Matthew Hale, Head of Books and Manuscripts at Bonhams Fine Books and Manuscripts, told The Sun.

"Like most enduring books aimed at younger readers, the Harry Potter books also have wide appeal to adults and there is a strong market among collectors for first editions. This copy is in excellent condition — one of the very best I’ve seen — and we’re expecting a lot of interest."

Bonhams Fine Books and Manuscripts will be selling one of these magical copies this November in London, so, if it turns out you don't own this rare copy, you might have to break into Gringotts, jinx a goblin and battle a dragon to withdraw some galleons.

But, if you do have one of these editions, we might have to perform the Imperius Curse on you.
