Calgary Zoo Hit Hard by June Floods and Needs Our Help!

It was only a few months ago, in late June of 2013, when the animals at the Calgary Zoo were forced to evacuate because of rapidly rising water levels on the Bow and Elbow Rivers.

Little did they know that they would be joining an already hefty evacuee list with tens of thousands of local Calgarians, some of whom probably had seen them at our awesome zoo at one point or another.

Around half of the zoo mammals, including twelve big cats, accompanied reptiles and birds on a short excursion to another zoo building located on higher ground.

They left behind the destruction of the torrential floods, as well as some of their companion zoo animals who sadly didn't have such a lucky fate.

The Calgary Zoo Needs Our Help!

Damage Done

Today, the Calgary Zoo is still feeling the effects from the disastrous floods. Only some of its facilities have opened to the public as there is still much cleanup and repairs to do in others.

Last week the CEO and President of the Calgary Zoo, Clement Lanthier, reported that there was approximately $50 million dollars of damage done and that there will be another $10 million dollars in ticket revenues lost by the time all facilities reopen in December.

He also mentioned that there is much work to be done and without any cash flow, there will be no future at the Calgary Zoo.

Life Without Animals?

Can we live without our cute penguins, ferocious tigers or playful orangutans? I don't even want to think of such a thing. We need our zoo and it needs us!!

Not only is the Calgary Zoo a world-class facility focused on conservation and educational areas, but it is a place of enjoyment, fun, laughter and learning for Calgarians and visitors alike.

How would our kids and even some of us adults begin to discover the beauty of wildlife on Earth without a firsthand experience at the zoo? Its animals are awe inspiring and open up our imaginations, especially for the younger generations.

What Can We Do?

It's easy to help out. All we need to do is unite once more like we did during the disastrous floods of June 2013 and help our Calgary Zoo get back on its feet.

Here are some of the ways we can help, outlined on Help Us Rebuild at the Calgary Zoo.

  • Visit - Head down to the zoo with the family, friends or on a date a few more times than usual this year.
  • Donate - the Calgary Zoo is accepting donations to help with rebuilding
  • Renew or Buy a Membership - Another source of income is memberships. They have great benefits and definitely give you some bang for your buck.
  • Fundraising - Are there any fundraising ideas you have in mind to help the Calgary Zoo rebuild? If so, get in touch with them and discuss it today!
