Killing a shark just for its fins is barbaric... when will the Chinese realize that sanity trumps culture any day.

Culturally insensitive? Please. If a bowl of soup is all a culture is wrapped up in then good luck.

The wealthy in their culture like to show off...by serving this gross soup to their guests. They all know it is around $40 a bowl, so those who serve it incur the envy of those who wish they could afford to.

Weird culture.
Where are the Occupy people when there are still places serving this slop?

I was forced to have it at a wedding once. (i was at the head table, everyone was watching) It's completely flavourless. I guess my palette is not refined enough to taste the exquisite suffering.

You kill it first. I eat shark meat, why would they waste a catch by throwing it back? Doesn`t make sense to me.

They mostly throw it back because the money parts are the fins, and they take up less space, and less time has to be spent processing them,
It's all about the money.

Disgusting and despicable. This lady should be fined and fired. Not surprised it was a Tory MP however. This is wrong in so many ways....

The practise of cutting fins off of sharks alive and throwing them back into the water is disgusting and this MP and the tory govt should be ashamed of themselves.

Will the shark fin soup or any of the other costs for this staged event show up on Alice's expenses? Akin to the $16 orange juice. Time for this "woman" to go.

Chung's remark, “culturally insensitive,” was probably used by Southerners about slavery and by the Taliban about women in education. Yes, even among an enlightened Asian population there are those who cling to a fabled past in the same evangelical spirit that defied evolution as a process and a safeguard. Moreover, all can be denied when there is money to be made.

When the Chinese are known around VAncouver for being insensitive to 'our' culture (whoever 'our' may be), that's pretty hypocritical. But so much is, and this is only one item of the 'you're discriminating against us for not respecting your community standards' variety.

Ethnically-exclusive media is one reason why the negative associations of "assimilation" are part of the betrayal of what we were told in the days of the influx, that "they" would integrate like other immigrants had before them.....no such luck. Now there's a Chinese-only political party to boot....and Chinese-only workplaces. And restaurants where "Westerners" aren't really welcome, nor blacks or hispanics or even Koreans or (especially) Japanese and Filipinos and South Asians.

The shark-fin agenda is only one aspect of "imported chauvinism".....and for the Tories it's not surprising they'll do anything for votes , and in fact seem to specialize in offending people at large by doing the most outrageous things. That she's doing this for votes is clearly obvious, and the claim that's it's a provincial matter not federal is completely at odds with her endorsing this dish in the way she's doing; as a federal politician she should have gone NOWHERE near this.

Well, there is a Canuck hockey player just over on another page with a large white horned mountain goat that he killed with a hi-tek bow and arrow.

Maybe he can haul it over to the Jade Restaurant and have those horns chopped off to be boiled with the shark fins there.

Then Wong, Chung and Booth can get their napkins and go "wild" over feeding their faces with these dwindling species!

Be careful what you wish for, so far there hasn't been much coverage lately of the ongoing poaching of bear for gall bladder, which is much more widespread than trophy hunting for mountain goat......I remember a Chinese defence about gall bladder poaching, they blamed it one white hunters for pandering to their desire for them ($40,000 each, not sure how much the paws are worth but they're also taken...for soup). Evil white men, pandering to Chinese beliefs, was how the bear hunt's defenders put it.....

I am more upset to read that only the Chinese media was allowed.......this is Canada not China.

You're right. All her white voters should be bombarding her office with mail and email.

Wonder what would happen if another MP made a point of inviting only white voters. I doubt that she would be happy about that 'oversight'.

'Parts from endangered animals include musk deer sent glands, bear bile, seal penises, bear's gall bladders, tiger bone, and rhinoceros horn, Endangered Asian barred owls, hawks and other owls are made into a soup which is supposed to improve eyesight Endangered Imperial eagles feathers are rubbed on skin.'

These are banned in Canada.

Chung, who is also head of the B.C. Asian Restaurant and Cafe Owners Association, said he will stop serving shark fin soup if and when federal regulations are brought in. In the meantime, he feels a ban is “culturally insensitive,” So Mr. Chung will you also fight to legalize the above because the ban is "culturally insensitive'?

“If a product such as shark fin is derived from a legal, humane and sustainable harvest, we see no basis to restrict its trade,” said the statement.
It's like the Ivory trade. You have to stop all trading and harvesting of it to stop it.

(a) prove that it's legal
(b) prove that it's humane
(c) prove that it's sustainable

All evidence available says that shark fin on the market is NOT legal, it's NOT humane, and it's NOT sustainable. Unless maybe you read only Chinese-language media and listen to politicians pandering for Chinese votes (or foreign backing).

I'm all for respecting cultural traditions, but when your tradition endangers the survival of species or requires the butchering of animals for a small portion of their body all so you can assert a high social status, I am no longer respecting.

It also endangers you and every oxygen breathing creature on this planet. Seriously. That is why experts want a ban. Also the maiming is a barbaric - throwing back live sharks without fins into the ocean to suffer and die. The seal hunt is more humane! At least they kill them or try.
