Not introducing any new products into a market demanding healthier food options destroyed the American Twinkie.

When was the last time you bought one?

How convenient for Hostess to blame the union. Could it be that a more health conscious clientele is rejecting their sugar, fat and calorie laden products?

Wrong union representing you.
You should got the UAW.
Then you would have gotten a bail out cheque.
03:31 PM on 11/16/2012
Huh? When did the UAW get a bailout cheque? You should stop watching Fox and the like, and get some real information from somewhere else.

But what are we going to eat when the world ends?! If The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Zombieland (among others) taught me anything, it's that Twinkies are supposed to be the last remaining food source!

To All Canadian readers:
Does anyone know how to write a letter to the editor of the Canadian edition. Today Canada got the lead story "Dark Night of the Twinkie"; the U.S. lead was "Israel prepares invasion of Gaza". What I want Canadians to do is besiege The Huffingtonpost editorial office with complaints about the lead stories for the Canadian edition. Most of the time they are American stories.

I really believe that the Canadian edition is the American edition with a few story substitutions. This is a matter of mind set not news content. If you read the provincial sites, they are full of provincial news, that could be included in the Canada site instead of the current story mix of well over 50% American News.

Can anyone name a single product that Hostess has made to expand their business to appeal to the ever expanding health concious population? Think about the last time you bought a Hostess product, when was it?

OK, so, they shutter a $2.5 billion business.

That's their decision - but if they expect anyone (with a brain) to believe it is because of the greedy workers and not because people are wiser in their food choices I have a buyer for their "wonderful" brands.

FAIL

Err, it's undoubtedly a combination of both factors.... Smaller profit margins due to loss of revenue, loss of flexibility to pay workers, strike, bankruptcy.

Note this last paragraph in the article:

"Hostess, founded in 1930, was fighting battles beyond labour costs. Competition is increasing in the snack space and Americans are increasingly conscious about healthy eating."

This factor and bad management are what are killing the company. The unions, only 30% of the workforce, are being used as a scapegoat once again. Any company that can't survive a relatively short and partial shut down of its operations when it is making 2,5 billion in sales is likely to fail anyways, Plus, they'd already reached an agreement with their largest union, so something else is going on.

Take a look at the snack food area of the supermarket the next time you are there. In large stores, there are literally hundreds of choices, with new variations coming all the time. Meanwhile Hostess has been offering the same stale line of products without much innovation for years and years now, The market is changing and they have failed to respond.

Bad management kills off companies, not labor, but hey, why let a chance to bash unions pass even if the charge isn't true.

It's just so much easier for the right wing Ding Dongs to blame the workers for their "greed", rather than examine the facts. Crappy management and crappy products=bankruptcy.

Tell it to the pineberry. Actually, that one got saved but you'd be surprised how many varieties of fruits and vegetables have been all but eradicated in the last 100 years of human expansion and F&V industry consolidation (which includes all associated deforestation).

Anyway, we haven't been very good at maintaining the variety of available fruits and vegetables.

You sound like a very typical republican; not looking at the facts before spouting your opinions.

If a company has such a ridiculously small profit margin that they cant afford a small upset like a strike, then it was inevitable they were already going out of business and would have declared bankruptcy sooner or later.

But go on, say whatever you want; the academics in the room will just laugh.
