Someone will buy the brand and maybe even the factory.
They will rehire the same workers at a fraction of their original pay and not allow unions.
And life goes on.

While I feel sorry for those who lost their jobs would the world be worse without Twinkies?
But as Apu Nahasapeemapetilon once said 'You cannot kill a Twinkie!"

WTF is the plan if Americans all wake up one day and quite smoking and guzzling sugar? That's a lot of jobs and sin taxes gone. Face it there's not plan for a healthy workforce .

Twinkie and Wonder Bread have too much brand recognition - someone will scoop up this fire sale. I doubt the convenience stores will even see a hic-up in their deliveries.

I'm not saying the union could have been more helpful in this situation. However this company has taken two of the best brands, Hostess and Wonder Bread over the past 10-15 years and driven them into the ground. During the last bankruptcy here in Canada they sold out to Frito-Lay. We will still get Wonder Bread here but Hostess brands disappeared a long time ago. This was much more bad management than bad unions.

Remember when you used to be told never to swallow your gum because it would sit in your stomach for 7 years? Well, as an adult, I always think they should have said Twinkies instead of gum. Those things could outlast many things, maybe even human civilization.

Too true. The stuff we used to eat in the '70s is really weird, and all chemicalized. I think that's why we see what we see with increasing numbers of physical, mental and neurological impairment in the present. But what do I know?

Another Union that has destroyed 18,000 jobs; brilliant!
09:45 AM on 11/16/2012
Which other companies have been destroyed by unions? Unions are always the easy target when, especially in this case, the product itself sucked. I don't know a single person who actually eats Wonder bread or Twinkies. I'm sure people do but enough to support 33 bakeries. This is just another attempt to discredit unions. In the same way the auto industry tried. And what was the real problem in the auto industry? The product sucked!!!
10:09 AM on 11/16/2012
Agreed...it could never be the big$ boys who have raided this co. Of $ & now blame unions for wanting a living wage for ALL 18, 000 workers.

Blaming workers for your problems is so last century..try diversifying to healthier alternatives and watch the bottom line go up...adapt, or die....

No one is "Blaming" the workers; we are blaming the "Unions" as in: If you can't bake it nor deliver it; you can't sell your product... Nothing like a Hostess Cupcake and a class of milk...

Neither of which is good for anyone..milk in small quantities, as in coffee, maybe but Hostess products are a witch's brew of chemicals and very little in the way of actual food...and Unions don't create economic instability, greedy owners do, especially when they try to continue to foist  dubious 'food' products on the public, who for the most part ...obviously not you...are  beginning to consider what they eat, what they feed their children....Blaming unions is  ridiculous at best, and rightwing whackadoodle at worst...enjoy your  snack
10:02 AM on 11/16/2012
If you can't live on the wages after they are cut, then you are nothing more than a slave forced to toil long hours and still unable to put a roof over your head, food in your belly and gas in the stove. Why blame a union? The workers in that union vote and if they voted against all those cuts, then there is a good reason. At what point do people wake up and stop blaming unions? You can't subsidize corporations forever by allowing them to slash wages and pensions and then hand out applications for food stamps and medicaid that the rest of the public pay for. This seems to be a case of poor management and nothing else.

09:15 AM on 11/16/2012
"Americans are increasingly conscious about healthy eating"...means that a lot more brands should be gone. Let us have corporations that step up and create jobs for honest food that should be consumed.

The market spoke, here, not the government. I was shocked to learn that twinkies were still being made, not that they were finally going under. Other brands that have been more forward thinking and responsive to changing public demands have done well in the same economy.
