We have one screwball justice system in Canada. You can cruelly abuse and kill other living creatures, including children and get off with a slap on the wrist. Try infringing someone's patent or defrauding welfare and you will get sent away forever. We need to seriously look at what we value anymore.

I couldn't agree more. Kill an animal in a horrendous way, kill someone while driving drunk, even murder someone and you will get less jail time than passing bad cheques. It's pathetic.

Where are these notions coming from? Not from reality, that's for sure.

Passing bad cheques is not a criminal crime unless its purposeful fraud - even then, fraud is generally met with 6-18 month conditional sentences.

Canada has one of the best justice systems in the world in terms of proportionality - a "worse crime" than another will ALWAYS have a higher sentence.

Judge's are pretty good when it comes to proportionality.

Fraud - depending on the type and amount - will generally always be a conditional sentence around 6-18 months. Unless of course it's a sophisticated operation.

Patent infringement is a TORT law and not a CRIMINAL law.... Oh the failure of our education system...

His gf or any woman with this man is looking at her future. If you can do this to an animal and not be ashamed by what you did, you would have no problem doing the same to a human.

A jail full or murderers, rapists, child abusers, etc.. Do you sincerely think they'd care about a kid who kicked a dog?

This is a rare case where I think a minimum sentence should been invoked, like maybe 4 years and a lifetime ban from ever owning anything living.

There's no justification for this douche not getting jail time. Why the judge let him off so easy spanking him with a wet noodle is beyond comprehension.

How???I don't understand how our society has still so much disregard for an animal's life that he walked away......

Hopefully Derek Colin Anderson will run into someone who remembers his face and name, and who decides to seek retribution on behalf of this dog and girl friend.

This judge should be kicked off the bench. He and sadly many others like him have, and are continuing to, make a mockery of the Canadian judicial system.

Oh, Canada! All these years, I thought that you were so much better than the US in many ways. Now I see that your courts have as much common sense as all the American courts combined. Sad, very sad.

You're right.Canada used to be a wonderful place to live but lately seems to be getting as bad as other countries.I don't know what's happening but people seem to be getting crazier.Debbie Andrews locked her dog, cat, and bunny in alone, with no food OR water for over a week while she went on tropical vacation. When she got back, found out police looking for her she got on plane, flew from NB. to ALB. POlice are doing nothing.Wish I could get my hands on her.Can you imagine how it would feel to die of thirsy, all alone, waiting for help from someone you trusted who never came.

At least the Americans can say they chose those who are judges..we get stuck with lackies whose only claim to the ost is that they sucked up to the right people...Look at some of the freaks we have posing as judges.

Not a whole lot of concern seems to go into choosing those who have any common sense, or even a bit of intelligence.
And judges are never held accountable for really bad decisions they have made.

Say what you will about America's justice system, but if this guy were down here (and our courts almost certainly would allow those pictures into evidence) then he would be doing time in one of our illustrious centers of criminal rehabilitation and would likely never get out.

I hate to say it, but I gotta agree. Canadian judges would probably make great interior decorators.

I know our system is pretty messed up, but when I hear about people like this guy I remember that most people doing hard time ought to be doing hard time.

The perp should be euthanised to put him out of our misery. Upon reflection, so should the ivory tower judge who is obviously far too well insulated from the realities of life.
