This guy and his buddies in the Harper gang will use whatever coniving way to stop abortion.Leave this topic to women and you should be concerned about the economy that you have screwed up.Worry more about how you are treating the canadian working class and not your corporate buddies.

With all the issues that one might disagree with the Harper government, Steven Harper does not want to open this issue. Nor, does it relate to corporate involvement. It is strictly some pushing their religious views on others.

as much as i hate the idea of gender selection, i'm pro choice, thus i have to say no to the motion. the women's right to choose trumps all in my opinion.

Refuse to define gender as they may be transsexual thus ending the argument.

It is totally not OK to abort a baby because the parents decide it is the wrong sex.

That's absolutely true - it's not ok...I agree that it's a horrible practice. However, it is a lesser evil than having the government overtake medical and reproductive rights/decisions by regulating them.

Do you think that it's ok for transvaginal ultrasounds to be mandatory for any woman in certain US states, who wants an abortion, including victims of rape? You probably do not agree with this practice - it's not dissimilar to this situation, in terms of government regulation.

It's totally not your business what two adults decide for their future, and to insinuate that this is a huge problem is an insult to all Canadians.

There may be some who decide to do this and it is shameful, but unless someone comes out and says it, how do you decide?

Sex selection is a real threat to women from certain ethnic groups that are coming to Canada in large numbers.

08:14 PM on 12/05/2012
What a dilemma! Sex selection through targeted abortion is almost exclusively the province of immigrants or members of 3rd world countries. It could be argued that we should deny immigration to women of childbearing age from India and China on the basis they will likely commit a crime, okay, a potential crime, of selective abortion.

poor reasoning.
12:07 AM on 12/06/2012
Just trying to highlight the idea that there are always unintended consequences to an action. Immigration is perceived as a good thing but we are not allowed to discuss the down sides. Allowing people from a radically different culture to suddenly be thrust here is foolish without mandatory education. If a person from a poor village in Bangladesh immigrates to here there should be a year’s mandatory cultural education. Poor intellect has caused the Canadian problem of selective abortion.

10:53 PM on 12/05/2012
Nope, I just think it's stupid regardless of my political beliefs. I would rather a gender-based abortion or two occurring (I do not approve of them whatsoever) then this abortion debate going any further. Warawa doesn't even have any statistics on its prevalence in Canada. What a cheap attempt at opening up a useless debate.
11:45 PM on 12/05/2012
The largest party in this debate doesn't even have a voice.
08:02 PM on 12/05/2012
He says the motion is "about discrimination against women, rather than about reproductive rights." Women discriminating against themselves? This has reproductive rights all over it

So you are OK with fetuses being aborted because the parents decide they are the wrong gender.

IS THAT WHAT I SAID?! I said it doesn't make sense not to classify it as a reproductive rights issue.  Please relax

We actually need to reopen the abortion debate in Canada & have a proper discussion with all the facts.

"A woman's right to choose"

Simply an excuse to a free pass on taking responsibility for one's actions.

There's no justifiable reason a woman should be getting pregnant & needing an abortion, aside from rape or life threatening medical conditions. There are numerous methods of contraception that are pretty close to being 100% effective. There's even an operation that prevents pregnancy 100%.

Then there's the number one tried & true 100% effective method of pregnancy prevention that requires no tools, drugs or operations, known as abstinence.

I'm sorry but "a woman's right to choose" is nothing more than an excuse created to justify abortion.

Let's also have our Politician's state their real belief on abortion, rather than hiding behind the "I support a woman's right to choose" mantra.
08:21 PM on 12/05/2012
STOP IT NOW! This question has since long been decided and we do NOT need to reopen it. We are NOT the US - move south and leave our laws in place. As a female and knowing someone who had to have an abortion, she had a tough decision but it is HER decision not yours or anyone else's.

A decision she wouldn't have to make had she been responsible of her actions in the first place.
12:27 PM on 12/06/2012
Your right the feminist movement won the right to abort itself. Wonder if they had seen themselves on the losing end of sex selection… ironic.
08:24 PM on 12/05/2012
Yeah, and you don't make mistakes, right? And if you were a pretty, 17-year-old girl with a family that neglects you, you'd be able to fend off all the boys that want to have sex with you. Even without proper education, you'd make the right decision, right? You've never used a condom which broke... oh, yeah, you abstain. You don't like the pleasure of sex. Because of this, no one else should. Why don't you stop playing Barbie with other people's lives. Worry about your own. Control and judge your own children. They'll hate you for it. I promise.

Wouldn't it be easier to simply make it illegal for the sex of the baby to be revealed until the 5th month. People who truly want a child don't care whether it's a boy or girl. That being said I'm highly suspicious of the real motives behind this bill, looks like an attempt to reignite the abortion debate.
08:23 PM on 12/05/2012
WHAT? It is not your business it is the parents of baby and their doctor. This is NOT a debate for Canadians.

There are some cultures that do this abortion based on gender. Call me stupid I think my daughter and son are of equal value.

Is there evidence that any sex selective abortion even takes place in Canada? Any investigative journalists wanna tackle that, instead of telling us what these fundies believe to be true?

I support Canada's abortion laws. I don't want the debate re-opened.

I can't fathom how sex-selection could possibly be tolerated in our society, however. It's disgraceful and flies in the face of equality.

I realize some members of the Conservative party want to re-open the abortion debate through a back door. I trust Canadians can keep that from happening while still finding a way to prevent sex-selection.

I don't see the point of ultrasounds in the first place unless there is some concern about the development of the fetus. These days it just seems to be the thing to do so that the parent to be gets an annoying picture to inflict on family, friends and coworkers.

I don't think sex selective abortion occurs in great numbers...but it's better than waiting until the child is born and then abusing or killing the child.
