"This past June, the Globe and Mail reported Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow stating, “Once again the Harper government is forcing Canada into a major trade negotiation that will only benefit the 1 per cent

Like the Canada-EU deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership could force Canada to change its drug policies, its copyright policies, its environmental and public health rules – all without going through the normal parliamentary process.”

These trade treaties essentially make an end run around the rule of law and create international corporate slavery.

I really hope the NDP use this treaty as a campaign promise to get votes. Promising to scrap this treaty would give them a landslide victory!

Split vote your landslide is wishful thinking.
Just as many will vote for Trudeau based on tie color and looks.

Harper waltzes away again.

If the CPC did impliment its new copyright law why hasn't it made a public announcement yet.Is this part of its transparency. Don't announce a new bill and then leave vulnerable Canadians to its penalties. It may be the first time this has been done since Confederation. As far as I know Geist isn't an employee of Parliament. I also get emails from open media and they haven't either. Violations of this bill will get to use section 7 of the Charter.

Geist is a government employee since his position as a university chair is paid for by the Federal government.
06:50 AM on 12/14/2012
Geist has no relationship with the government since a university chair has an arms length relationship with the government with no alignment to policy. It is also guaranteed money that usually isn't provided by the government, but by private donation.

I'd rather do away with copyright laws altogether. When something can be duplicated with the original product left completely intact at no additional cost, the duplicated product should never ever have the original value of the original; let alone argue that the duplicate somehow costs hundreds or thousands of times more than the original. It took nothing to duplicate, as such it costs nothing to duplicate. Which means that yes it's only a crime when you make people pay for something that costs nothing.

We're getting ever closer to replicator technology from Star Trek, and that's going to change the world.

Which is why writers should never write and musicians should never record anything.

Here's a fun reality:  People who have writers they like, or musicians they like:  They give them money.  Sure in a lot of cases they don't have to, but this magically doesn't prevent people from attending book signings or concerts.

Your logic falls flat.

It's at least encouraging that there has been "overwhelming" response, meaning Harper will take this issue seriously and take into account that we don't want more controls.
03:19 PM on 12/13/2012
He has taken that approach before? Harper doesn't care about Canadians.
05:48 PM on 12/13/2012
He is the designee of the foreign based corporate power structure and therefore lacks legitimacy as a Canadian representative.

Between the TPP, FIPA and CETA Canadians' ability to make their own decisions about their country is being ripped away.

Beware the age of copyrights. Possession is a disease with corporatists and they skew everything to that end.

I agree, intellectual property laws are ridiculous. How can Disney, for instance, possibly justify owning the trademarks of Cinderella, Snow White, and several other cultural fables that date back hundreds of years?

What they are setting up for is the strong arming of anyone that shares anything with copywrited content on any level at which point just browsing youtube becomes risky.

Time to start standing up to this harper guy we are losing our connectivity to the world here.

"we are losing our connectivity to the world here"

That's the point. Harper's objectivist ideology demands a compliant wage/chattel slave society. Freely communicated ideas lead to intelligence with leads to critical thinking which leads to bye-bye righties …

Hello? This is the Harper Reform party we're talking about here. Canadian's rights? Are you serious? If a shareholder or corporation's request should come into the equation, do I need to explain to you who Mr Harper is going to shaft first?

Yeah, us.
