Good to know

"Even if there were dirty tricks, such as harassing and misleading phone calls alleged to have been made during the 2011 campaign, those people determined to vote would have found a way to cast their ballots, he said.

"There is a fundamental disrespect right now for the intuitiveness of the Canadian voter," Hamilton said.

WOW. SPIN OF THE YEAR!!

Can we assume that Hamilton would like “intuitiveness” to be a requirement to vote? Perhaps he would like to include SES or ethnicity as well.

"None of the eight applicants were actually prevented from voting." I agree the bar should be relatively high for overturning particular results, but once again the Harperites are either deliberately or stupidly missing the bigger point. Should I be able to get away with robbing banks by saying that it doesn't really matter because the share price of the bank didn't go down? Should we use the 'actually voted' argument to ignore fraud? Are we to hold that overturning fraudulent results would cause 'chaos', therefore forget it? Sort of like too big to fail banks allowed to get away with monumental fraud and theft. We are up the creek folks.

Attempted murder is a punishable crime even if the murder wasn't successful.
Conspiracy to commit murder is a punishable crime even if the murder wasn't committed.

Election fraud is a punishable crime even if the Con's dirty tricks weren't successful...time for the Cons to "Man up", take responsibility for their actions, accept the punishment and move on.

Well said. However, we also need some sort of decision that will lead us to a place that will help us get rid of these unethical undemocratic practices during our elections.

That "place" you speak of would be to not have Harper and the Reform/Conservatives in power!

I believe the election system in this country needs updating to better reflect actual functioning Democracy.  But if I were going to change just ONE thing in the meantime; it would be to have EVERY politician's public statements accompanied by a visible real-time polygraph test display, with a dip in an icy dunk tank the instant reward for straying from the truth.
Who's with me?

Maybe Hamilton should talk to the old folks at that seniors home who were done out of thier votes because thier station had been moved a few blocks away and was too far for those in wheelchairs or on crutches or had peeing problems to get there. It wa snot hard to read the intent of that cruel event. \
I forget where that was but us followers of this will remember.
There was another situation near a seniors home where that attendant did not show up on time ,stalling on purpose and some of those seniors could'nt wait any longer because they had incontinencew problems.
The seniors in homes were treated as "non humans who should not be allowed to vote.
So? DON'T TELL ME THERE WAS NO ELECTION SUPRESSION!!!
mAYBE SOMEONE ELSE CAN NAME THAT RIDING!

I'm no supporter of the Conservatives or these activities, but I would be positively shocked if they lost this case.

Because, like it or not, the evidence isn't definitive enough to say that these calls actually affected anything substantially, even though they are were directed at non-conservative Canadians. If the Etobicoke Centre case failed on its much more convincing basis, we have no reason to expect anything different here.

Instead, this case will allow the Conservatives to state that they have been all but legally absolved of any wrongdoing pertaining to voter suppression. I am sure this is not what the Council for Canadians is looking for, but it's what they are going to get.

I agree with your post, although, we here in Toronto thought that our Mayor would not be found guilty of his charges and he was. Every now and then our courts get it right. And those moments make me proud to be a Canadian! Lets hope this decision is the correct one in terms of democracy.

Yes, please turn a blind eye to election fraud. Because.

I find it offensive that the Canadian taxpayer has to pay for the defense of an alleged crime that a political party committed.

I hope that the ruling comes down WITH COSTS to the defendant, specifically identified as the Conservative Party of Canada and not the Canadian Tax Payer.

Typical Tory hack. Blame the ruling for chaos instead of blaming those within the party who tried to steal citizens democratic rights. The Conservative Party of Canada should be held liable for ALL court costs, including the judge's salary, and all other associated costs. Why should the taxpayer be forced to pay for their political dirty tricks.

It's not just being prevented from voting, it about causing confusion when voting...that should not happen. I do recall being harassed and not wanting to even vote because I felt belittled...I voted, yes, but not with an open mind.

Unbelievable!.. Your "voice" as a citizen, your right to vote, to be heard and counted,... well, as long as you don't fall for any of the dirty tricks that politicians use to stop, stall, steal and/or eliminate, the competition and prevent or discourage their supporters from voting...
Lessons MUST be taught and learned by this affair, by the underhanded politicians responsible for these disgraceful tactics... They are NOT acceptable in a Democratic Society.
Even ATTEMPTED, voter fraud, is a major crime against all Canadians and must be deal with in a SEVERE manner, to discourage future attempts by unworthy political party's and their cohorts, to deceive citizens by trying to "stack the deck" in a supposedly, Democratic Election..

"Eight Canadians — bankrolled by the left-leaning Council of Canadians"

i find it offensive that the corporate media takes great pains to hang the "left leaning" label on the CoC- who's bank rolling the Tories??? And why is the stewardship of democracy a right -left issue?
