". . . that the site, which sits on a former military base, was 'built for hardworking men and women of the military, not freeloading Indians.' "

As a pacifist I find this statement both racial and ignorant.

Since the Conservatives have become renowned for their racism and ignorance, it seems Braydon Mazurkiewich's comment, although a fair reflection of those he represents, is only embarrassing because it was articulated in a public forum by someone other than a federal Cabinet Minister.

First Nations? Second Thoughts. by Tom Flanagan is the most dog-eared book in his library, right next to Atlas Shrugged …

"What I did write was racist and I do apologize for that," he said.

"But my feelings about the reserve going in ... I don't think that would fit well in that community at all. You know, you hear on reserves all the time, people are burning down their own homes. There are shootings and stabbings, and we don't need to bring more of that to Winnipeg."

Racist again in his apology on being a racist. Big surprise.

If what he said is true how is it racist? The real racist action here is the segregation of a group of people( in this case Indians) in a compond ( or reserve or what ever they want to call it so they feel good). I thought the whole idea of multi culturalism was to intermingle people not form "blocks' of different groups. Just another goverment feel good waste of money. Good luck determing who gets to live there since its federal aany status Indian should have a legal claim.

Yes, that is the point of multiculturalism.
However, how can we force multiculturalism on the natives?
Its kind of hard to dictate the rules to someone in their own house.
Natives aren't immigrants.
02:54 PM on 12/16/2012
Multiculturalism is the acceptance of all cultures. No to try and obliterate one completely. All I can say to this, is before you speak... take a trip to a reserve sometime, the natives are slowly being choked out, our pride destroyed. We have lost much.. yet, it is decided that we are unworthy because we save a few dollars when we shop off reserve? You all seem to think we are a bunch of rich people. We are not. Welfare is every where not just on the reserves, crime is everywhere not just on the reserves. We do not get much more then anyone else. The only benefits I get from being native, I do not pay partial HST. I do not pay for some of my medications. Our rent on reserve is lower, but prices for everything are higher. Most of us HAVE to go off reserve to shop. everything else, the rest of the country gets as well..

Resignation is the best way to go no need for this kind of dialog, the PC party needs to weed out its rotten apples just like every other political party none are perfect

Yeah, there's something fishy about that.

My 23 year old is at home paying room and board because the vacancy rate for apartments is about 0.3% here. Plus there are leftovers in the fridge when he works late and we don't drink his beer like his former roommates did, and he's honest about those perks. ;-)

I couldn't read all the previous comments, but was anyone else offended and believe his apology stank like racism also?

That is exactly the irretrievably indoctrinated militant that conservative programming aims to produce.

"But my feelings," he moans. "You always hear (racist propaganda)," he whines.

Any adult who "always" hears racist hate propaganda should have enough personal responsibility to extract himself from the kkklowns that he necessarily must be surrounding himself with in order to “always” hear that kind of trash.

For cons, their “feelings” will always be more persuasive than fact or (god forbid) logic.

He should have just stopped talking entirely after the words, "I don't think."

This is the youth of the Conservative Party. Boy are we in for some fun in the coming years/decades.
12:33 PM on 12/16/2012
Youth of the party? Take a look into Tom Flannagan, the rumored father of the reform movement. An American historian who made his career exposing the "myth of Louis Riel, fighting Aboriginal rights and has recently published a book advocating private property on reserve. There is an agenda, one I fear is leading us to a dark place.

This is the future of the neo-cons.This guy is one of their pathetic best. He sounds like he is running for mayor of Toronto or trying to get appointed into the senate. Mom and Dad must be so proud.

Well that is no way to teach a young CON to behave. They actively show everyone by example that a dirty deed by any CON does not end in dismissal.
Never apologize or explain yourself, no matter what. Boy do I feel better knowing what type of leadership we have here in Canada under Harper.

I am guessing I am one of the few that understand this was a mistake made by a young man. I realize I am going to be pummeled by anti-Conservative individuals in this case. I am a Conservative and have never ever been a racist, just a realist. I do wish we could all live together with limited issues but that is not the reality of the times. As a side note (which will annoy many) we need to start giving individual responsibility to aboriginals and cut out the Assembly of Chiefs.

"I am a Conservative and have never ever been a racist, just a realist."

And, no doubt, "colourfull" at times.

Richard Nixon was not a crook; because he said so.
