Only way I know how to fix things is talking- not a sign of weakness wit opens of communications. The Minister and PM Harper would do best to meet and speak with this First Nations Chief. No weakness on their part- just compassion and open willingness to understand. The First Nations people are the most impoverished, incarcerated, addicted, uneducated in our country we think great. Rather than enriching corporations- and selling our riches and even labor rights to the Chinese- ( think BC mines who do not have to hire BC workers but import cheap chinese workers) WHY cannot we sit down and speak with our aboriginal leaders?? Why not? OK othesr might also use this tactics? Nonsense- no others have such need nor justification.
Basically Canada does not want to help aboriginal peoples best I see it. Nor pay for this- most of us would rather raise a few dollars of taxes to educate and retrain our northern peoples.

I'm not pleased by all the posts being removed here. That reflects the problem of racist attitudes towards Natives that is completely unacceptable.

Canadians have to be sincere and responsible toward all Canadians and the First Nations deserve our respect and our help. I thought this was a "We" country not a "Me" one. Let's show our strength by showing each other respect.

The Governor General must take the initiative and go see her out of concern for her health and out of compassion for her and for the Native Community. It's actually totally right for the GG to do so on behalf of the queen and the people of Canada, the GG has a special responsibility for Natives in Canada.

No promises but just express our concern and give her the respect of the office.

She's a Chief and she must be respected by our leaders whether anyone here likes her tactic or not.

She is jeopardizing her own life by trying to blackmail the prime minister. This is all a show. She doesn't have the courage of her convictions---she will not die. Call her bluff and show her for what she is---an arch manipulator.

Blackmail the PM? ?Harper is obligated under the treaties signed between the First Nations and the Crown to consult with them before making changes that affect their land and well being which he failed to do. If it takes a hunger strike to force him to comply, then so be it.

She will lose both face and credibility. She will be no match for Mr Harper and he personally is not obliged to meet with her.. .

Hardly surprised that Harper doesn't value the life of a First Nations woman.

Oh come on. What an absurd comment. And you base this statement on what? That he isn't meeting her "demands"...yeah , right.

Translate 'concern' into action and just meet with her! What harm could that do! Just do it!

More like Mr Harper is getting concerned about his political health if she really does go all the way. Very dicey gamble. He is kind of cornered, if he gives in it could start a bunch of others from all areas doing the same, if he doesn't and something bad does happen he'll be the leader that choose his ego over a human life. Makes a lousy campaign poster.

I think he's hoping that the hospitals will intervene before she dies.

The hospitals have no right to intervene in her hunger strike.

"if she really does go all the way."

All the way where? She's eating soup and she is sitting on a well documented reserve of energy. It would take months for her to 'waste away'.

This is nothing more then holiday theatrics.

Harper should give in to extortion and meet with a person who is threatening to commit suicide....
That would set a good example for the kiddies out there...

Yeah because Ghandi was such a bad influence and regarded badly by everyone in the world for his hungerstrikes.

Spence is to Ghandi what I am to Einstein.

Don't worry she wont starve herself.

What is needed is a reorganization of reservation operations, now the band council gets and keeps most of the government money. They live very well and spend their time telling the peasants that everybody picks on them, Definatly where the gov money goes should be public.

And you are an expert on all Native relations, how?
07:34 PM on 12/25/2012
Duncan doesn't even know what planet he is on, let alone who Spence is.
He is probably still trying to figure out what he supposed to be doing in real life.
However having said that, we don't even know what planet he came from, but we do know he blends in with his other ministers who don't really know what their job id either.
That's why Harper has them answering for each other in the House of commons do they it can help with their identity crisis.

Harper has no respect for any canadians; and the chief is not starving, she is eating fish soup, and probably needed a diet anyways. Though not my kinda of diet.

What's wrong with the Governor General and the Prime Minister sitting down the First Nations? If Brazeau and Duncan really wanted to help her they'd try to convince the GG and the PM to come to the table.

Brazeau was appointed by Harper, if anyone can phone him up at home and ask him to do it, it's him. Also when Duncan was told to intervene by the PM he could have said "Sir, I think you should talk to him" - he didn't.
