Does Chief Spence not realize that all laws are enacted by the government of Canada and all negotiations on existing or future laws must be with that government? This notion that the Queen and Her representatives are somehow relevant in all of this is at best a quaint piece of window dressing.

You have no idea, no clue about the history of Canada and the legal relationship between the First Peoples and The Crown. Shameful!

By your comment, you don't even know what "The Crown" means. If you think that in regard to the present enactment or administration of law in Canada it means the Queen of England, you are living in a fantasy.

Repeat after me: HUN-GER STRIKE. Much more accurate representation of what she is doing than "a liquids-only diet" ;)

I had a logging accident last winter where i caught a large branch right across the teeth.
I ate soup for a month and a half untill my teeth re-set.
I didn't lose much weight either

Nope. But then you probably weren't restricting your caloric intake below the level at which your body can sustain itself. To purposefully do so is either 1. a slow suicide, or, 2. if done to motivate political action, a hunger strike. I don't see why some commenters here have such a hard time with this concept. Too much Sun, perhaps.

All these snappy comments from non - natives. Hmmm. . . .
05:27 PM on 01/08/2013
Is there some sort of requirement that one must be native in order to comment on what is happening in our country?

I would have no problem ceding the comment field entirely to those deemed "native" provided that any and all future tax dollars flowing to that group be raised from within that group. As soon as it begins to impact my life or the life of my family and community, it becomes very much an issue of personal interest and subject to my voiced opinion.

This issue is so much bigger than your tax dollars. If you can't see that, you should probably do a lot more listening and less commenting. And why the shock quotes?

A spokesman for David Johnston says he won't be there because the gathering is a working meeting with government on public policy issues.

. . . and it gives Harper deniability.

I have an honest question. Can you die on this diet? Is this woman actually in danger? Just wondering...

Theoretically i imagine she could. If all you ate was fish broth and water you would last a long time but sooner or later the lack of other vitamins would produce other health problems and potentially diseases.

Who is to say that she's only getting fish broth? She's on a 'liquid food only' diet. She could be getting Big Mac smoothies for all we know.

It's a HUNGER strike. I'm betting she's pretty hungry by now.

My feeling is that it is disrespectful of the GG not to attend. There is always a native ceremony and prayer at the outset of these events and as a rep of the Queen he should make an appearance. I don't agree that the GG has no power, if you remember the decision made by the last one to allow Harper's prorogation of parliament in 2008/09.

I was reading about how much these Chiuefs get paid while they are travellling around - I wonder if she is getting paid for this time of while dieting? - were I a member of her band I would be asking some serious questions next council meeting - of courase that is pre-supposing she allows any questions!

If the governor general ever actually exerted any power, we'd end up severing our relationship with the crown. He's a non factor and should not have to attend because he doesn't really do anything.

i don't think we should expect much from the GG, for his is just a ceremonial position. what we should have expected is something like a symbolic gesture, and look...he's already made it.
