Maybe the new cover is meant to say to potential girl readers, "Hey, I'm a cool chick who loves the 'Anne of Green Gables' books. You seem pretty cool, too. You should read them!"

Maybe? No?

Just a thought.

Blondes have all 10 million California starlets as role models.
Reds only have Anne and Yosemite Sam.

And the Weasley family from the Harry Potter books!

I was thinking the same thing. It's not like us redheads have a lot of role models, or heros to look up to, they had to take this away too. Redheads are probably one of the most teased groups, especially girls, and now we can't even have fictional literary characters to feel a kinship with.

This is so sad! This picture & cover takes the essence away from the book, way to ruin a classic!

My review on Amazon.ca:

"Are you KIDDING me?

The ONLY reason I would buy this edition is to rip off the cover and BURN IT.

The books are fantastic, but the new publishers are pissing on Lucy Maud Montgomery's memory by defiling her works with this cover. I will buy every other edition. This day-glo abortion of a cover should never have been selected, but I'm guessing the individual responsible for this at CreateSpace either didn't or can't read the novels. "

I want to give them the benefit of the doubt.  BTW, CreateSpace's parent company On-Demand Publishing LLC's phone number is a direct line to Amazon.com's Legal Department...

Stupid is what this is. If I had a daughter she would be banned from reading this version.

I think the people who designed and approved the cover must never have read the books.

This doesnt even make sense. The fact that her hair was red was a major issue in the books. It set the tone for her character and how people treated her.

"and much of her angst in the first book revolves around the fact that she has carrot-red hair and is freckled"

Gotta wonder how the publisher is going to explain how the girl on the cover is nothing like the girl in the books?

Maybe they took creative license and changed it, just like the woman here in Vancouver changing Twas the Night Before Christmas to take out the pipe smoking part.

Hey I remember growing up in the early 90s there was a tv show on the Disney Channel called Anne of Avonlea and the actress was blond on the show too. At least she had freckles though.

Megan Follows is not a blonde, and as far as I can remember, she's the only one who has played Anne Shirley in all of the Anne of Green Gables TV movies (Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel, and Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story).

Sarah Polley played a character called Sara Stanley and Jo Pitts in Road to Avonlea, which ran on the Disney Channel from 1990-1996. Sarah is blonde, but she wasn't playing Anne, and in fact Anne doesn't appear in the series at all, it's just set in the same town as Anne of Green Gables.

Micro-bios must pass muster. Mine won't.

Put that image in my mind, and I'd have to read the books just to see what happens.
