“Americans respect a prime minister who takes a strong position on issues of interest to Canada, but they're not going to respect a guy who insults them gratuitously.” Stephen Harper

I laughed out loud reading this..this is the government that got rid of environmental laws that were inconvenient to their dirty oil-pushing agenda..
The Cons can't Con us any more..they are just as dirty, and just as sneaky about trying to please their corporate donors as ever..to chide the US about anything, when as bad as the US record may be, it's miles ahead of Canada right now...well, good attention grabbing headline, but, as usual, no truth to it at all...
Considering the masses of people who showed up to protest a pipeline, yesterday, in Washington, Obama will be a lot more circumspect about his decision than before...but Harper? It's all Alberta, all the time, as dishonorable as that position is...

America wants our oil.
Just not right now.
They want it to remain safe, and within reach for the time when its advantagous for american national interest to sent south.
Only the most innocent among us could believe climate change trumping US energy security.
So I believe we need to shift our focus away from exporting this finite resource to utilizing this asset for the benifit of a 'canadian national energy program'
Ship it east and west for domestic use.
Upgrade it and refine it here for domestic use.
Create a tax system that would feed the revenues created into a alternative energy strategy. Lower fuel and energy prices would drive our economy.with an advantage undreamed of in the developed world.
All the while funding research and development that will bridge the transition from a hydrocarbon based economy to the next energy source.
Besides....
who really wants to be the guy sitting on a big pool of oil when nobody else has any?

America considers the 2.5 million barrels of canadian oil the recieve everyday as part of their domestic production. And...if a plan to redirect that production were to revealed, the american response would be immediate and vigorous.
03:02 PM on 02/18/2013
The US consumes 16 million barrels of oil a day and half of the that is imported. They do proclaim that they will be energy independent in ten years, but that's just not going to happen.

"We're the only country in the world that's committed to getting out of the dirty coal electricity generation business," Baird said.
-------
Baird continued bragging....
"Yeah!...we're just switching everyone to dirty oil. Canada is gonna be the Big Dogs in resources, Mr Harper said so...
Listen up,..Follow the CONS lead, get rid of the scientists, environmentalists, take the land you need, lower standards and wage expectations,(to accomodate trade)..OH!..and pass all the laws etc. that you may need,( behind everyone back, no info, debate or discussion)... until the deals are (almost) completed...Try omnibills ..you could hide anything in those, things that may help us later...
Don't worry about cost, deficits, etc..(and people that "don't count"). .. it's not like we are gonna have to pay it back "personally"...Stack the Senate with Conservatives, and let them keep fundraising for us, on the taxpayers dime..

"SH$t!... did I just say all that, out loud?"

Hey America, go Wind and Solar. When you end up freezing in the dark in decade don't come crying to Canada. Neither of those technologies is viable or financially sound.

I don't believe that Baird has any concern for the environment. The oil pipeline and the tar sands are what he cares about. If we expect the United States to follow our policies because we supposedly working harder to protect the environment, then maybe Canada should follow in the footsteps of countries with better energy policies than ours. In the long-term, oil will not be the solution. Renewable energy sources are the future. Oil and coal are both bad. Arguing over which one is worse, does not represent a long-term solution.
01:16 PM on 02/18/2013
Cleaner on coal is irrelevant, if we're dirtier overall.

Oh, Baird, just pipe down (pun intended) and stop being such a petulant wind-bag. Hint: When the argument boils down to 'They're worse than we are!" it's already an admission that you're both pretty bad. Stop finger-waggling, do the work, and let your deeds speak for you because your mouth ain't doin' such a great job.

(Sorry, feelin' ranty, today.)

China and India are building 4 new coal power plants – every week. LOL - LOL - LOL - LOL.

India is planning 455 new plants compared to 363 in China, which is seeing a slowdown in its coal investments after a vast building programme in the past decade.

Let’s cut the crap about Canada’s role when it comes to polluting the planet.

Since Harpo and his minion of authoritarian followers have begun to believe that they have an honest opinion, all they have ever said is, "they're worse than we are". The Libs, the NDP, now the US and anyone...except Israel, who can do no wrong. They think leadership is finger pointing and everyone is as ignorant as their base.
10:52 PM on 02/18/2013
He's absolutely right. They ARE worse than we are. In other words, we are better than they are. I support Israel 100% -- Jesus was a Jew. I don’t want to see the Jews massacred by their neighbours. Some people do!
