These "schools" while funded by the Canadian Government were run by the churches, mostly the catholic church. Why are they not being held responsible ?

Maybe because a lot of the time the people that brought the children there wore 'Scarlet Tunics' & pants with a yellow strip down the leg ?

More of those wonderful schools the Catholics built?

I will never understand why the Politicians and the Church, who colluded to create the residential schools, never faced jail for this.

If you read through the comments edgemo you will see that it seems impossible for some Canadians to even admit this took place let alone hold anyone responsible for it.
If you want to see blatant hatred and racism, read comments by Canadians about natives.
It is disgusting.

Please be careful not to overgeneralize.

Some of us aren't full of hatred.

.. and some of the FN folks are full of Nativism; which is equally as problematic when trying to have a civil conversation.

And like the young men who died in WW1 & 2, in a foreign country, for the benefit of people who spit on their graves.

If you look at the cenotaphs with the names and ages of the soldiers who died in the wars, from various communities - you see an awful lot of 18 & 19 year old BOYS.

And their pay wasn't all that great either.

I am sorry...but this popup study smells fishy and biased when secret studies pop up where independent studies can not even be done.

Also, was there a study of non native children, in same time frame as the study above were children were infected from schools?

I'm sure we will find some interesting statistics there from the early 1900s.

I am not disputing that children became sick at schools...I am just aying you have to be careful with secret studies that you can't even verify.

The Residential Schools were death camps for First Nations children. Sterilization, beatings, molestation, murder, rape, torture, medical experimentation, denial of medical care and proper food, deliberately exposing healthy children to sick were the norm, not the exception. Documentation and evidence is readily available online if you do the research.

Yes, South Africa studied and followed Canada's apartheid system when they set up their own. The Nazi's similarly followed the Residential Schools example of internment camps when launching their campaign to exterminate the Jews. Nazi scientists and doctors (along with their Canadian colleagues) performed medical experiments on First Nations children in these schools. This was all done with the full knowledge and consent of the Canadian government and churches.

I have one aunt who lost all her teeth as a child. Their dentists just pulled them out because they could (without any pain medication). My aunt's leg was cut open from hip to foot. They claimed she had polio (she didn't). Whatever they did to her left her with chronic pain and unable to walk properly for the rest of her life. My other aunt sustained a life long back injury and pain after she was deliberately thrown down a flight of stairs by a sadistic nun who routinely assaulted children (my own mother included).

The Residential Schools death rate is more like 50%. Tens and tens of thousands of children were killed in those schools and buried in secret. It was nothing less than government sponsored genocide.

When I was in school in the 1960s, we had a dentist we referred to as a horse docotor, who routinely pulled teeth out that has the slightest cavity..and sometimes he was drunk, and got the wrong one. One of my sisters has no teeth now because of this butcher.
And this was in a public school, for white kids.
We also had nuns who hated non-catholic kids, and who were heavy handed with their yardsticks. .and all of the teachers had thick black straps they used to hit the kdis hands with.

They were different times then.

They were, but the worst thing about the Residential Schools was not the more brutal than usual (believe me--I belong to the United Church) discipline, and the occasional criminal who sexually abused children and wasn't caught, or the way the food budget just wasn't enough to feed the number of children that were attending. The worst thing about the Residential Schools, and the thing that our Prime Minister apologised for on our behalf for, was the way that the First Nations children were robbed of their language and culture and usually forced to attend these schools to "civilise" them. The whole idea was to "take the Indian out of the child" and they were beaten very severely (not whacked with a yardstick) if they ever spoke their language.

With no control group it is really hard to say just how bad this was. If the same research was done on how many non-residential schools native and non-native alike and boiled down to a percentage it would be interesting to see how out of line this is. 3000 per 150,000. With no comparison we really have no idea just how bad this figure is. Is it twice as bad? Is it four times as bad or is it just marginally worse?

It seems that many aboriginals today think of their ancestors as living in a peaceful utopia, at one with nature, and that all the problems in their modern communities are directly caused by the evils of colonization.

Lost in all this is the fact that the great North & South American tribes were often at war with each other. Before the major influx of Europeans, Inuits massacred Dene, Iroquois massacred Hurons and vice versa, Hopi, Yuma, Apache, and Navajo tribes warred with each other, etc., etc. There was slavery and torture, war, thievery and territorial disputes everywhere. In Central and South America, where the indigenous tribes built permanent cities and ceased to be nomadic, they exhausted the natural resources around them, and suffered deprivation and starvation. In parts of what is now the southwestern US, aboriginals lived in canyon caves and ledges, climbing precariously to small niches where they would be safe from their enemies.

The Great Tribes of the Americas didn’t have iron, gunpowder, or horses or the wheel, and most had no written language. They wanted these things from the Europeans and were eager to unite with the Europeans to make war with their ancient tribal enemies. There are parallels between how the Europeans behaved and how American aboriginals behaved - just because the Europeans won doesn’t make them worse.

And victorious Aboriginal tribes didn’t send the children of the vanquished to Residential Schools; they massacred them outright or kept them as slaves or, the luckiest, as adoptees.

Sure. It was all well-intended incompetence, even letting the sadists beat the 7yearolds with horse-harnesses, and the pedophiles have free access to the dormitories. But forced assimilation cannot be forgotten, and all the incompetence that would never be tolerated if it were perpetrated on civilised children was fine perpetrated on all those consumptive Indian savages. We shouldn't forget why it was done in the first place, even though it wasn't done with malice, by mean people, for the most part. It was done by ordinary, racist Canadians just like us today.
03:56 PM on 02/18/2013
Sad when all I can think about is what this translates into tax payers dollars ,when what I should be considering is all those children taken by force to die without their families that is all. Look what all this racism by all has created.
I want to live in a Canada where all are equal and the past is forgotten. We all live in the present and look to a future with hope for all mankind.

Question how is this Harper fault he was not even born when the residential school system started and those who are blaming him can you explain this as stated in the story:

"In the 1990s, thousands of victims sued the churches that ran the 140 schools and the Canadian government. A $1.9-billion settlement of the lawsuit in 2007 prompted an apology from Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and the creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The research — carried out under the auspices of the commission — has involved combing through more than one million government and other records, including nuns' journal entries.

The longer-term goal is to make the information available at national research centre."

How is this Harper's fault again? Also what next they are going to blame Israel next?
04:19 PM on 02/18/2013
It's not Harper's fault. It's not Chretien's fault...it's not Brian Mulroney's fault. The fact is...it happened. Are you proud to be part of a country that did this to kids? Are you proud our country used racial profiling and punished them?
Harper is now the PM...he was elected to act as the head of the country and if this comes out during his watch - it won't be held against him. We should all be ashamed about what happened in the past and try to set it right. Laws need to be solidified and apologies made to families. This was wrong and I'm ashamed it's part of my proud heritage.

Nurture WITH nature.
When will people realize the past is assumptions which created atrocities not only against the Aboriginals of America but all over the world as well as other cultures.

Religion and the illegitimate Canadian Government are responsible for this and have done their best to conceal evidence then and even now. Those who have learned any less than that, have learned it from the writers of history taught in grade school and TV or the racism that surrounds them. The truth is there like it or not.

How Harper was not even born yet and can you even read the story? It says: " In the 1990s, thousands of victims sued the churches that ran the 140 schools and the Canadian government. I guess someone just cannot read when it is Steven Harper who is bringing this to light unlike past governments.
04:32 PM on 02/18/2013
No one in the current government hack offices did anything to help bring the true information to light. Justice Sinclair had to take the federal government to the supreme court to force the government to release the truth.
Be educated before giving credit to someone who doesn't deserve it. The government stall tactics simply cost millions of dollars for no reason, besides trying to keep the truth hidden.

"illegitimate Canadian Government"1) King John stuck a deal with Pope Innocent III for power over England.
2) Following King Richard III's death, a change of head of Monarchy is still in dispute to today.3) England created legislation to govern Canada having no legitimacy here.4) The League Of Nations included Canada as a Sovereign Nation.
Those are just three reasons why Canada's governments are illegitimate but there are several more including treaties not adhered to and ethnic cleansing.

Then, of course, there is how Harper has come to power but that is not what I had meant in my previous statement.
Just saying... :)

There were 50,000 listed in the lawsuit.
