Now We Are One

I've found the quickest way to bore my young colleagues (and the majority of them are all young, as in 20- and barely-30-somethings) is to tell them about the "olden days" of Canadian newspapers, the world in which I grew up.

Gather around, kiddies, while I tell ye a story...

Happy Mother's Day! Or as it may be, Happy Mothers Day! When Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to endorse gay marriage on Wednesday, his newly announced stance changed the gay-rights debate overnight -- and not just in the States.

Many progressive Canadians expressed pride that same-sex...

On Friday afternoon -- just a few hours after his Lordship had landed back at his boyhood home in Toronto -- I found myself discussing his return to Canada with my fellow VIA rail passengers.

I was headed out of the city for the weekend, and had...

Sunday Roundup: Life Is in the Earth

(3) Comments | Posted April 22, 2012 | 12:28 AM

Happy Earth Day! I hope to spend today, ideally, puttering about my garden. Yes, we can all aspire to do something more high-minded (and Barry Dennis, sitting right below me in the blog rail, will tell you how), but even just beautifying your own patch of soil contributes...

Sunday Roundup: A Big Week for the Personal AND Political

(2) Comments | Posted April 14, 2012 | 6:55 PM

While Rick Santorum was dropping out of the GOP political race for personal reasons, and Hilary Rosen was making personal attacks on Anne Romney for political reasons, AOL/HuffingtonPost office politics became big personal news (at least for those of us working here): Microsoft agreed...

Sunday Roundup: A Week for Redemption and Rebirth

I am writing this while gazing out upon a farmer's field that has just had 1,500 baby red pines planted upon it. There's no doubt they look rather fetal at the moment. You have to squint to notice that the rows of little green tufts are anything other than early...

Saturday Round Up: The Week that Wasn't

Two major government budgets were released this week, by Ontario and the Feds respectively; as widely anticipated, both will balance spending and eliminate debt by the end of the year with no cuts to any social services. Critics from the left and right applauded the leaders for showing such fiscal...

Well, there are quite a number of things to get through for this week, but if you'll indulge me for a moment, I'd first like to address an article that appeared in the Globe. Entitled "Is the Huffington Post the Future of Journalism?" writer Simon Houpt described our...

Sunday Roundup: Who Is Peter Kent?

(9) Comments | Posted February 25, 2012 | 11:47 PM

Well, it was an exciting week here at HuffPost Canada. It's not often you get an environment minister sitting down with a bunch of reporters and editorial staff to a no-holds-barred question-and-answer session, let alone a minister who has become as controversial as Peter Kent. Yet that's what happened on...
