Dear Earth, Sorry About the 25 Years of Broken Promises

Posted: 01/02/2013 5:10 pm

In 1988, hundreds of scientists and policy-makers met in Toronto for a major international conference on climate change. They were sufficiently alarmed by the accumulated evidence for human-caused global warming that they issued a release stating, "Humanity is conducting an unintended, uncontrolled, globally pervasive experiment whose ultimate consequences could be second only to a global nuclear war."

They urged world leaders to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by 2005. Had we heeded that warning and embarked on a campaign to meet the target, Canadians would now be healthier (because of reduced air pollution), have greater reserves of energy and more jobs. We'd also be a world leader in renewable energy and could have saved tens of billions of dollars.

The year was significant for environmentalists. In 1988, George H.W. Bush ran for the highest office in the U.S. and promised to be an "environmental president". He didn't have a green bone in his body, but public pressure compelled him to make a commitment he ultimately didn't keep. That year, Margaret Thatcher was filmed picking up litter. She turned to the camera and said, "I'm a greenie, too."

Canada's Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was also re-elected in 1988. He appointed a bright new political star, Lucien Bouchard, as environment minister. I asked Bouchard during an interview what he considered to be our most important environmental issue. "Global warming," he responded. I continued: "How serious is it?" His answer: "It threatens the survival of our species. We have to act now."

In 1988, the environment was a top public concern, scientists spoke out and politicians said the right things. Global warming was a pressing and present issue. Now, 25 years later, carbon dioxide emissions continue to rise, and we're already seeing the consequences -- more extreme weather events, melting glaciers and Arctic ice, rising sea levels, reduced water flows in rivers and climate-related illness and death, among others. It's driven in part by rapid economic growth in countries like China, India and Brazil. At the same time, most industrialized nations, whose use of fossil fuels created the problem of excess greenhouse gases, have done little to reduce emissions.

Humans are distinguished from other species by a massive brain that enables us to imagine a future and influence it by what we do in the present. By using experience, knowledge and insight, our ancestors recognized they could anticipate dangers and opportunities and take steps to exploit advantages and avoid hazards. Scientists and supercomputers have amplified our ability to look ahead. For decades, experts have warned us that human numbers, technology, hyper-consumption and a global economy are altering the chemical, geological and biological properties of the biosphere.

In 1992, more than 1,700 eminent scientists, including 104 Nobel prizewinners, signed the "World Scientists' Warning to Humanity", which included this urgent warning: "No more than one or a few decades remain before the chance to avert the threats we now confront will be lost and the prospects for humanity immeasurably diminished."

The document concluded that environmentally damaging activity must be brought under control and the integrity of Earth's ecosystems protected, critical resources managed more effectively, human population growth stabilized, poverty reduced and eventually eliminated, and sexual equality and guarantees of women's reproductive rights ensured.

The sooner we act, the easier it will be to overcome these difficult challenges. Every year that we stall makes it more costly and challenging, with increasing negative impacts on humans and our environment. There are signs of hope. Many countries -- as well as cities, states and provinces -- are taking global warming seriously and are working to reduce emissions and shift to cleaner energy sources. Some world leaders are even questioning our current paradigm, where the economy is made a priority above all else.

This is crucial. Over and over, the economy has determined the extent of our response, but how much value does it place on breathable air, drinkable water, edible food and stable weather and climate? Surely the economy is the means to a better future, not an end in itself. Surely it must be subordinate to a rich, diverse ecosphere that sustains all life. Let's hope this year ushers in a new way of living on and caring for our planet.

Been listening to Dr. Suzuki since the '70s. Every scientific prediction he has made on Climate Change has been accurate so far. Our inaction on CO2 emissions reduction thus far has been foolish to say the least. Our continued inaction is pure insanity!

You are a texan sharpshooter David. So many scientists working on this an so little answers to why carbon creates warming. It looks more like warming creates carbon. Please somebody show me a good study which does not fail basic skeptical evaluation.

The lament for our world from Mr. Suzuki is a statement of remorse for trusting that solutions can come from politicians to a series of complex global problems. There has to be more loud mouthed people who love their families enough to demand solutions not rhetoric. I can think of a few: reduce the human population, increase green energy, reduce consumption of all types, increase participation at community gatherings that work towards these solutions. Working together we can make a difference in everyone's lives that we touch. Don't give up on our children.

On the other hand — as human populations shrink: that may provide a bridge to a wiser and healthier population in the future, medium term, of 100 years or so. It will take 6 to 10 generations to flush out the worst of the epigenetic adaptations to environment; to clean up the planet and food supply. Homo insapiens indstriosus takes a possible step towards homo sapiens, but; do feel free to correct my Latin, Google dialect.

Mr. Suzuki, it's a sign of the times that our government has labelled you a "radical" and "enemy" and attempted to strip your non-profit of their tax-status... Now, 25 years later, our government denies what has been fact for all this time. Only because it is inconvenient for them and their corporate backers to accept and address the problem of global warming. As it stands, all domestic and global efforts to address this issue will be thwarted by our "pariah" government. Sorry to say, but any government environmentalism is officially dead in Canada until this regime is taken down.

When did the govt cancel all of the environmental laws?

This is an outrage, I tell you, an outrage!

They cut funding, and deregulated, to a point where the laws might as well not exist anymore. Try reading the news, and not the CPC footnotes, for once.

Where did I say that the govt cancelled all environmental laws?? My point is simply that our current government is fully bought and sold by Big Oil, which means they will never put a priority on the environment or even pay much attention to the issue of climate change.

Back in 1988 the problem seemed probably manageable. The Chinese were still riding on bicycles and had not yet begun their remarkable economic growth. India was just a vast poor country that had yet to begin enjoying the benefits of obtaining outsourced service jobs from the West. The US did have a conservative president but had yet to experience the right wing Gingrich takeover of the House and people with extreme right wing views now held by the Tea Party were completely marginalized. Today the problem no longer seems manageable at all but rather totally intractable. There are also probably about 2 billion more people to make matters even more difficult. After four IPCC reports and 20 years of international climate meetings all hope of limiting global warming seems to have vanished. Basically we are left with predicting how hot it will be and what might be the consequences.

Even Suzuki can't see the very real disconnect between the environment and the monetary system. We will never fix our problems within the current economic framework. It is not profitable. And therefore will not be done. Sustainability and efficiency are the enemies of our economy.

If the powers that were took up the challenge 25 years ago, Canada could, as Mr. Suzuki says "have greater reserves of energy and more jobs...a world leader in renewable energy and could have saved tens of billions of dollars". That would have taken foresight and vision. If our leaders of the past were lacking, what about the one we have now? Canada's potential as an environmental leader is (or was?) great, but it is not the direction we're headed. Unfortunately, the results of global warming are real and plain to see and Canada is a big contributor and becoming a bigger one. We are going backwards, not forwards, and our country is essentially being torn apart. The decisions our government has made, and is making are not in the best interest of Canada or the environment. This can and does make one feel powerless and think why should we bother trying to make a difference. Can you imagine if we all stopped caring and having a voice? Our planet will look like Tolkien's middle-earth in no time. So for me, I have to keep voting with my dollars and at the polls, raise my child with the same values and have faith that one day it will prove worth the effort.

One interesting result has been that many corperations have manipulated the situation to make even pollution profitible,, "carbon credits" are nothing more than a cash in scam, again,, they accomplish nothing except to further enrich the pollutors, who trade? these "credits" like they were some kind of commodity,..If! we are to see real changes happen? then it is up to you me we to make it happen,, one person here influences his neighbors, who influence their neighbors who influence, etc etc etc,..voting with our money,[dont buy from pollutors,if you can?], is very effective and may be the only tool that the larger corperations pay any attention to at all,,I am curious though, sub surface, down deep in some gold mine, has the temp been rising there?,.anyone?..It may be a combination of a natural event and pollution combined,..perhaps?..While I do not think;"we are all gonna die" ahem?, I do think we are in for a very interesting ride,

Perhaps, the Earth is in an abnormally cold state, historically speaking.

Just getting back to normal.

So basically you're saying we we should just cross our fingers and hope you're right. Good plan.

Deniers at every turn in the face of truth! Thank you David Suzuki.

Sorry but I long ago stopped listening to CBC high school science level , self promoted experts on the environment.

For a balanced perspective , read this and note the people at the bottom. None of them have been canonized by a public media entity but they all have equal or better education and training than Dr. Self Aggrandizing Expert .

cbc high school science? Suzuki has a phd in zoology and was genetics prof at UBC. just sayin...
125 scientists say its not true...125 scientists say it is...if you do enough research you can disproove CANCER. at least david suzuki talks to the public about how they can make GOOD DECISIONS about their environment and make our home a better place to live. all the others...write....BOOKS! ya lotsa kids read books today!

Thanks for pointing out David Suzuki's credentials. Much smarter obviously than those who want to disrespect him and credit him with nothing, when his education and IQ are quite likely higher than the naysayers. He's also willing to put his face out there so that the less academic among us can take potshots at him just for expressing a serious concern as regards the environment. And the rest of the scientists who 'don't believe' hide in their books so that the neighbors won't know that they said climate change just ain't real. Who really, really believes their own words, Suzuki or the guys who 'hide'?
09:36 AM on 01/03/2013
the climate policies are wack certainly...the redtape is long...but it's still bad for us...we breathe the air...no-one knows for certain what the cliamte will do true, yes we are small on this planet and our influence is small...but we can still try and minimise our using fossil fuels and find healthier alternatives that don't put money into pockets of huge oil companies etc and bring polluted air and cancer causing chemicals into our little tiny insignificant lungs...

This planet is going through it's periodic, cyclical changes - the earth has had freezing periods and warming periods for millions of years. Environmental scientists know this is true, and yet they continue to arrogantly profess that human beings are the cause" of co2 emissions. Rubbish! Co2 develops naturally on this planet, we aren't the cause of it nor can we control it. Yes, we are also generating carbon dioxide, but it is minor compared to what the levels would be if we weren't here at all.

If you are really worried about "global warming", the answer is not to impose sanctions and carbon credits to countries where the average person is further robbed (re: taxed), but in addressing the elimination of the worlds old growth forests. Trees LIVE on carbon dioxide, this is their primary purpose - they filter the air by absorbing co2 & put out oxygen into our atmosphere. Clear cutting the old growth for profit is the surest way to increase co2 in the atmosphere, not to mention destroying delicate ecosystems in the process.

But even if that is addressed, we're still heading toward massive global change - probably related more towards the pole shift, which also happens periodically in this planet's life cycle. The earth has survived for billions of years, in spite of us, and will continue on fine without us just the same.

In your obvious concern for old growth forest, have you considered that South America's forests have been obliterated in large part, firstly for the sake of the exotic woods that grow there and secondarily for the beef that can be raised on that land instead of replanting trees?

And while this might partly a cycle that the planet is in, the fact remains that we humans are also altering our environments with little regard for the damage that we're doing. Look how Canada alone has shredded our environmental protections in the last couple years. It's not just the atmosphere that Suzuki speaks out for, but the whole environment, land, water and air.

"the earth has had freezing periods and warming periods for millions of years"

Those are called Milankovitch Cycles after the guy who figured it all out. The warm peak of the current cycle was about 6000 years ago and the Earth should be in a gradual cooling trend with another ice age due in about 12,000 years.

That has nothing to do with the present rapid warming caused by excess CO2 in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels.

How do we know about those warming and cooling cycles that have been going on for millions of years? From the same scientists who are saying the Earth is now warming from CO2 in the atmosphere. So you really can't use that against climate science because that actually is climate science.
