Now What, 'The Walking Dead'?

Posted: 12/03/2012 11:25 am

*WARNING: A FEW SPOILERS AHEAD*

Holy. Crap. The last "The Walking Dead" episode didn't exactly begin how I wanted it to, but the ending was exactly how its winter finale should've been. I mean, honestly. Where to begin?!

First off, I've never read -- nor do I plan to read -- the comic books the series is based on. I like going into a show not knowing all about it and a show like "The Walking Dead" needs to be watched spoiler-free. From behind a couch cushion. On the edge of our seats.

"Made to Suffer" was aptly named, whether it pertained to the intriguing new group of survivors -- led by apparent comic book favourite Tyreese (Chad Coleman) (yeah, yeah, I don't like spoilers but there are some casting tidbits I can't avoid) -- locked up in their safer, albeit barred, surroundings; the hurt look on Michonne's (Danai Gurira) face as she and Andrea (Laurie Holden) came face-to-face, sword to gun; the one-eyed Governor (David Morrissey) sobbing over his now-dead zombie daughter, Penny; the final minutes as Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Merle (Michael Rooker) were finally reunited, or us poor viewers having to see Andrea and The Governor all schmoopy-woopy with one another (gag).

I'm not going to get into a play-by-play of what happened in the insane hour, but there are definitely things I need to get off my chest. Going into the episode, I thought it would be about Andrea and Daryl having to make the heartbreaking choice -- Rick's (Andrew Lincoln) group vs. Woodbury. Andrea would stay close with her creepy beau because, well, the woman clearly has the worst taste in men, is ruled by her lady parts, and after being away from her original group, has seemingly lost her marbles and instincts. Yes, I get that Woodbury offers a safety unlike anything she's known over the past year or so, but there's also something to be said for loyalty and she should've shown some of that with Michonne. Maybe not Rick, but Mich. I suppose easier said than done but for the most part, Andrea has been the most disappointing character of season 3.

Daryl, on the other hand, has been my favourite. Holding little Judith (a.k.a. Ass-Kicker, a much better moniker, I think), carrying Carol (Melissa McBride) to safety (can they just do it already?!), and being Rick's right-hand man has made the once-shady, crossbow-wielding grumpy-pants not only a force to be reckoned with, but someone we can all root for and relate to. I figured he would side with the good guys, not because of Rick and his newfound position of respect; rather, because of Carol. But alas, that choice didn't need to be made.

The shootout between the good guys and the bad was pretty much what we expected. We lost Oscar (Vincent M. Ward) in a short scene. Sad, but I'll take his death over a more prominent character any day. I did want the camera to focus on Merle as he heard one person -- Maggie (Lauren Cohan) or Glenn (Steven Yeun), probably -- shout out Daryl's name and see that recognition in Merle's eyes, for him to pause from shooting, to see him torn for a split second. Or, worse, a hint of that sick smile of his. But something, anything to show Merle's true character (whatever that is), whether it be a sign of hope, even happiness, at seeing his brother, or a glimmer of how truly evil the knife-limbed dude has become. But, sadly, that didn't happen and I think the show lost a huge opportunity to give us another dimension of Merle.

Speaking of psychos, the fight in the creepiest man-cave ever was epic -- made only more satisfying by its ending. I can't be the only one who thought Michonne would be on the losing end of that battle and would be stuck in Penny's cage as some sort of plaything. Shudder. But it was heartbreaking to watch Michonne and Andrea come face-to-face, and how devastated Mich was to see her only friend choose a sicko over her. (Side note: I really didn't think we'd see dead Penny really dead, thanks to Michonne's handiwork with her katana sword. Even I didn't want that for the Gov.)

Now we're left with one helluva cliffhanger. Daryl and Merle in the middle of the zombie arena as Woodbury's residents scream for their heads and a pirate Governor looking on, and mighty pleased with himself. Grrr. Will Andrea close her mouth long enough to figure out something to do? Will Rick and the crew save their man? Or is this the last will see of the Dixon boys? It's going to be a long two months.

"The Walking Dead" returns Sunday, Feb. 10 (waaaaaah!) at 9 p.m. EST on AMC.

Everybody should give Andrea a break! Obviously the woman has high testosterone levels and she's gotta do what she's gotta do. There are some things even the apocalypse can't change.

Walking dead is my favorite only next to one show: American Horror Story. AHS: every episode blows my mind. Horror unlike anything I've seen on tv, ever. But I sure am a die hard Zombie fan. It's hard to choose between the two. I can hardly wait until February.

seems like the gov. is "setting" merle up if only to let them both go (back to the prison). he needs an inside man, merle would be that man. he'd have to destroy his baby brother. the shock on merle's face is genuine, but it has to be that way to be believable.

michonne is pissed because she doesn't trust anyone, and she knows something weird is going on but sees that no one cares. remember she was a lawyer before and can see through the governor.

the prison group doesn't trust michonne but it's a zombie apocalypse and you have a newborn baby who needs formula. come on.

carl and the rick clearly both need to stay. rick's character will get darker and darker, depending on which path they take. carl will become eventually the leader (if the series goes that far).

andrea's character is really the only one i dislike. she is shallow and vapid, and too caught up in her crazy "womanness" to see what's going on. i hate when they write a dumb blond character - it's insulting and unrealistic!

There's this fancy new-fangled thing called "breast milk." Pretty tasty to babies when served warm. Just saying there's no way they could know the mother would die and wouldn't be around to feed the kid.

And Andrea isn't dumb; she just likes sex with strong, powerful men. Remember--as the viewer, you know more than the character does. Up until this episode, she hasn't seen anything in the town or with the Governor that is that inexplicable or unreasonable. I think people react badly to Andrea because she is so unapologeticly herself. If I were stuck in a zombie apocalypse, I wouldn't mind having her at my back. Or my front for that matter.

After all he's done to support Rick, Rick BETTER go back to save Daryl....
11:22 AM on 12/04/2012
this show has become ridiculously stupid, filled with bad writing and terrible characters (this has been happening for the past season and half, but now it is just getting out of hand). first off why is michonne so pissed off? bc they killed her chained zombie friends (something she does all the time) or bc they took her sword for two days (something the prison group also did)? also why in the world did the prison group trust michonne? they didnt trust anyone yet they suddenly see a limping lady walk up with baby formula and now they suddenly believe and trust everything she says. Also why did they kill off the one character that wasnt ridiculously annoying? Lincoln and Carl need to be removed from the show, their irrational behavior and the groups loyalty to their stupidity is really annoying. also as for that firefight. did not the woodbury fighters take out and snipe about 5-10 marines from long distance earlier this season? but apparently shooting lincoln and his group 50 yards away is impossible, especially when lincoln just stands up and walks through the street shooting, even stopping to pull out his magnum and see if the person he shot was actually Shane. This show is becoming unbearable to watch.

Then don't watch.
08:08 PM on 12/04/2012
I enjoyed the first season and enjoy the concept. I watch because I hope it gets better but this season has been a complete disappointment. it has good ideas, a great concept, but the actual writing falls apart.
04:57 PM on 12/04/2012
I think this show is amazing. The pacing is spot-on, and there's a sense that no one is expendable, which keeps it from being too formulaic.

I do understand what you mean about Michonne though. I don't see that this character has been well drawn. Why this vendetta against the Governor?? She feels he's a hateful psycho? Then stay the heck away from him! Is she actually in love with Andrea, and hopes to "save" her? That would explain her actions, but if that's the case the show needs to make that clear. Right now it looks as if she's butting in where it would be safer for her to stay away.

Great episode and great review, btw!
08:14 PM on 12/04/2012
The pacing may be good but it is pretty obvious that there are some characters that are expendable, they appear to be any of the lesser characters in the show. it would be nice if they actually develop some of the new characters. they havent really developed michonne despite the fact she likes to snarl, chop off the heads of zombies and is very spiteful.I also agree with your Michonne analysis. I find it strange that everyone has consistently made stupid decisions that places them increasingly in harms way. for example, why did they even care about the baby? not only is it harmful for the well-being of the group, but it resulted in one of the deaths of its group, and this after she attempted to abort the baby. also why is every human group against the other? this insane tribalism doesnt really make sense.
04:23 AM on 12/05/2012
Michone knows that the Gov sent Merle to kill her and she had already worked out that they killed the soldiers - for someone with a tendency for vengeance that would be more than enough. I do agree that we need to start seeing more of her personality ( and I am sure we will soon) but I like that she has been mysterious so far. I think largely she already does trust Rick's group because although they haven't treated her all that differently than the Woodbury crew did they have been honest with her and they are honest with themselves about the world they are living in instead of living in some fake fantasy world. When she was watching them reunite with Carol and taking care of the baby I think she could see that they were real people, good people, and she can get on board with that.

I think the really interesting thing coming up will be what Daryl does about Merle. The previews have given away the fact that Daryl returns to the group with Merle and that members of the group are none too happy about that. At this point I can only assume that Rick allows this because of his loyalty to Daryl and because they need Daryl and although he's not stupid enough to trust Merle, Merle knows most of Woodbury's secrets and will be a handy (no pun intended) fighter in the inevitable showdown to come.

Completely agree on the missed opportunity with the Merle character. It was kind of weird that he had no reaction to finally seeing Darryl. I didn't expect a hug while people are calling for their heads to roll, but a twinkle in the eye or something..... It came off kind of odd, especially since he was so desperately searching and asking about Darryl.

I wanted to slap Andrea. She has clearly lost all common sense.

Glad to see the infusion of new blood into the crew, if it comes to that. It should be interesting.

Love this show.

This is my favorite show and I am not normally a zombie fan (didn't know it was based on comics). I knew the governor was shady the second he appeared (good actor) and surprise, surprise, I found out he is British in real life and does Shakespeare. They really have the American accents down perfect. Can't wait till February.

There are no spoilers in the Comic series, in some areas it is better than the show, in other areas like Lori, the show was better and kept me guessing. However, the Governor was much better in the Graphic series, I find it disappointing they have a gumpy country boy as the gov. and not the Rasputin like mad man from the series who was much more frightening. I would suggest to all fans to read the series as well, only the outline is similar. Great review by the way and , yes it is going to be a long two months.
09:31 AM on 12/04/2012
I agree with you, but after thinking about all of the things the Governor did in the graphic novel (for instance...to Michonne), I realized there's probably no way television producers would want to put that on television. Same deal with Lori's demise. The television version of her death was probably a lot easier to stomach for viewers than I think seeing how she went out in the comic.

I think there are a lot of compromises they've had to make for the television series, but that's part of the reason I enjoy it; the anticipation of "how are they going to show this on screen" because so much of the books were just absolutely brutal.

I was about to write the same, viewers don't need to be concerned that reading the comics, which are great fun, will spoil the show for them, because the show and the comics are sufficiently different, just the basic idea and some overlap between them.

My concern about reading the comics (when all I've known so far is the TV series) is not so much about the episode-to-episode development of the story but more how the overall story line unfolds. I don't want to know the end game, if there is one.

He's getting to be a little too cool and calculating for what? . . . 12 or 13 years old?
12:09 AM on 12/04/2012
In the comic series he starts out at 6 years old. The show made his character older. But his portrayal has been she same in both...

I think that's part of the point. Are you comparing him to kids his age you know? Or kids his age who are living in a zombie apocalypse?

"I've never read -- nor do I plan to read -- the comic books the series is based on."

You should. It is like the reading the novels and then watching the show Game of Thrones in that it is similar to, but not exactly like, the series. It provides the same type of experience (as much as books and movies can) and is just as enjoyable. When it diverges it is actually even better because it catches you by surprise and makes even more of an impression.
11:48 PM on 12/03/2012
have to respectfully disagree with you. i tried reading the comics and just found them too depressing and cynical, with no sense of hope or heart. now if other folks dig the comic, cool, more power to them, have at it. they're just not my cup of tea. the tv show on the other hand is friggin' great.i was hooked from the very first episode. i had my doubts about this third season, what with an action hero thrown into the mix (michonne), and the series as a whole getting into the usual standard zombie storyline (with whole world falling apart , humans, instead of banding together to overcome the problem, fight among themselves), but it's been handled really well with the right amounts of action, blood, pathos, guts, hope, and heart. i'm really looking forward to the start of the second half of season three.

Something along those lines. It IS going to be a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG two months. I pray the world doesn't end on December 21st, and if there is a catastrophe, that it doesn't interfere with the airing of the show.
Till then...

Why do they have to do this "mid season finale" crap anyway? Is there a reason beyond building anticipation?!
