The heat is on and we say bring the summer sun -- it's for basking in, strolling in and getting active in. But before you shed your layers and hit the beach, park or your favourite walking path, make sure you adjust your skincare routine and take some extra measures to protect yourself from summer skin problems like acne, sunburns and premature aging from over exposure. Here are a few tips for achieving a sun-kissed glow, without ouch or regret.

Hydrate and Hydrate From Within

For a real boost in skin moisture and clarity, hydrate well starting from within. Drink more water! Summer heat can zap our body's hydration, as we lose water through sweat. Refuel regularly by keeping a water bottle (filled with tasty additions like raspberries or cucumber) handy at all times. Keep water at your desk and with you as you move. Load up on water-filled foods like watermelon as another healthy way to hydrate, or reach for coconut water as an electrolyte-rich treat.

Dehydration is a concern in hot months. In extreme cases, this can have disastrous health consequences. But on the milder end, you'll see the effects first in your skin.

Time Your Sun Exposure to Maximize Vitamin D Production and Minimize Premature Aging

We've all been inundated with messages about safe sun exposure -- we know to wear sunscreen. Sunscreen creates a barrier between the sun and our skin, helping to ensure we don't burn. The downside to "blocking" the sun's rays is that we are unable to absorb the good the sun provides -- UV rays are needed to produce Vitamin D in the body. Most of us are Vitamin D deficient and can benefit from light, well-timed sunscreen-free sun exposure. A morning walk, before the sun is hot and overhead and under 15 minutes can give you the boost you need. Avoid overexposure to the sun, even when using a good quality sunscreen. Too much sun can lead to premature aging.

Consider What You Are Putting on Your Skin

What you put on your body is as important as what you put into your body. And just as I suggest you go all natural with your food consumption, so too with the products you put on the outside. The problem with conventional sunscreens is they are filled with nasty chemicals that can increase your body's toxic load. Minimize your toxic load towards more vibrant health and reach for a natural sunscreen instead. The internet is full of DIY sunscreen recipes. If you don't feel like making it at home, look for natural products like the ones on this list.

Cleanse, Exfoliate and Hydrate Naturally

Sweating in the summer sun is great as it releases dirt and build-up in the pores, but be sure to cleanse the grime away with a gentle, natural cleanser. A salt-based exfoliant is a great addition to your skincare routine and for an anti-bacterial boost, try an at home honey mask. It contains just one simple ingredient -- naturally powerful raw honey.

You're ready to bring on the sun! Be safe, and enjoy the glow.
