Edmonton has been Hafis Devji's home for his entire life. He has lived here for over 40 years, since his parents emigrated from East Africa, when their political leader, Idi Amin, forced out Devji's family along with 80,000 other Ugandan residents.

Since his family has been in Edmonton, the Devjis have played an active role in the local business scene and within social organizations around the community.

Throughout his life, Devji has seen Edmonton's transformation and how monumental the growth of this city has been, particularly over the last 10 years.

"Edmonton has grown at a tremendous rate. And I believe it will continue to do so, as long as it retains its people. Edmontonians are this city's greatest asset and they have forced and created growth opportunities simply because of their own persistence and desire," says Devji with a smile. "Edmonton determines its own fate - we choose our leadership, we show them how we want the city to evolve, and if no one listens to us, we just go out and 'make something' ourselves. That's why we have limitless potential."

Hafis wants to take his career of entrepreneurship to one of leadership - representing Ward 10 as City Councillor - because he believes the city needs to add a business perspective to facilitate the vision that has been established by Mayor Mandel and the previous leaders of our city.

"We can make anything happen - but we need to ensure we have a solid foundation. We need to make sure we are managing our budget appropriately, being smart about our spending, and looking for new ideas to reduce tax burdens but still spur investment and growth," Devji asserts. "I have been in business for 25 years, and it's not because I have had unlimited funds at my disposal. I have had to take my small amount of capital and continue to think and innovate to grow it into what I have today. That requires creativity, strong negotiation, and a lot of listening. And that's what I want to bring to City Council."

Among Hafis' priorities as City Councilor are:

Ensuring consistent economic growth by supporting local businesses, controlling city debt with balanced revenue generation and staying in our budget so we do not burden residents with more taxes.

Promoting the preservation of green spaces, making the right development choices at the right places and supporting safe and prosperous communities.

Planning finances to support senior's housing choices, making senior homes more affordable and supporting ease of access to safe and reliable transportation - ETS and DATS.

Maintaining and improving public infrastructure, like the LRT, roadways, sewers and sidewalks to promote a safe, walkable and transit oriented ward.

Realizing the potential of Edmonton as Alberta's capital city by incorporating innovative, forward thinking and eco-friendly ideas while supporting arts and culture.

Election day is Monday, Oct. 21 2013, and advance polling is well underway. You can learn more about Hafis Devji and his campaign by contacting (587) 524-3755, or by visiting Vote4Hafis.com.

"It's Our FUTURE. Together we will make Edmonton an even greater place than it already is." Hafis Devji.
