A Calgary student narrowly avoided what could have been a terrible accident Tuesday after a road sign on Deerfoot Trail took a tumble on to the busy highway below.

Jay Mangat was the passenger in a friend's car driving along Deerfoot Trail around 2 p.m.when he noticed the sign near the 32nd Avenue N.E. exit bobbing violently in the wind and rain of a passing storm. He took out his phone to capture video of the sign flexing and dipping dangerously. Just as the car passed under the sign, at around 39 seconds in the video, the sign came loose and fell to the ground.

Mangat feels lucky to be alive.

“I wasn’t expecting the sign to actually fall, I thought it would just dangle and stop and everything would be all right,” he told the Calgary Herald.

“It was about to hit my car, but it just dropped to the side and I was lucky enough to survive.”

Tuesday's storm was the second storm to hit Calgary this week, bringing with it hail, downpours and wind gusts of more than 100 km per hour.
