The 800 block of Robson Street, between Hornby and Howe, in Vancouver will stay car-free until the end of the year as city staff ponder a permanent closure, announced city hall on Wednesday.
The popular street has been even busier this summer with the installation of giant bean bag chairs made recycled from the sails of Canada Place. It encourages people to sit, socialize, eat, or read a book in the heart of downtown Vancouver.
The Pop Rocks seating is part of a city program called VIVA Vancouver that aims to turn streets into vibrant community spaces.
"For the past two summers, and during the Olympics, this block of Robson has proven to be a hub of activity," said Mayor Gregor Robertson in a news release. "It’s been a very popular destination for people to enjoy music, impromptu performances, creative types of outdoor seating and a place to relax and enjoy our downtown."
In December 2010, Vancouver city council asked staff to look at creating a public square in that block.
Staff are expected to report back to council later this fall after consulting with TransLink and the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association.
