A heated battle of words broke out in Montreal when an angry Quebecer called out an English-speaking group for not speaking French, a YouTube video purportedly shows.
The video, filmed on a street corner in the wee hours of the morning, captures a row between a man, accompanied by a woman, and a group of men from outside Quebec. The user who uploaded the video, Harris Robin Kalash, describes the bust-up:
"According to the shady looking guy in a hat people who live in Quebec must speak french and if they don't then it is an insult to their culture," the user wrote on the video page.
Quebec's upcoming provincial election on Sept. 4 has put the province's language law in the spotlight. Eighty per cent of Quebec's 7.8 million residents are native French-speakers, compared to Canada's overall population of 34.5 million, Reuters reports.
But this video wasn't exactly an intellectual debate on the subject -- the conversation quickly devolves into screaming, and eventually into threats and accusations of racism.
Maybe both groups should have said "bonne nuit" and left it at that.
