Kristopher Nicholas Cook, the Calgary man who is accused of pretending to have cancer and holding a fundraiser that raised $7,500, was arrested in Victoria, B.C. today, Calgary Police reported.
Acting on a tip from the public, the Calgary Police Service notified the Victoria Police Department that the 28-year-old was in the area.
Police had issued a warrant for Cook last week in relation to the fraudulent fundraiser. After holding a silent auction to allegedly raise funds for his cancer treatment in July of 2011, guests paid a total of approximately $7,500 for various donated items.
Attendees became skeptical and wondered if Cook was using funds for treatment. Questions were raised about whether he had been diagnosed with cancer at all, and police were notified in August of 2012. Police issued the arrest warrant after determining that the funds were raised under fraudulent pretenses.
"Cook was arrested by the Focused Enforcement Team without incident in downtown Victoria," the Calgary Police release said, adding that he will be returning to Calgary in the coming days.
