The Vancouver police travelled to Saskatchewan to arrest their "most elusive rioter" from last year’s Stanley Cup rampage.
Jonathan Stephen Mahoney, 24, faces several criminal charges after a Good Samaritan trying to protect The Bay from being looted was beaten by a mob. Video of the incident was posted to YouTube.
Robert MacKay had been trying to stop a crowd from smashing the store’s windows on the night of June 15, 2011. He was swarmed and knocked to the ground by 15 people. Until this week, all but one of the suspects had charges recommended against them.
Mahoney was tracked across the country from Manitoba to his native Newfoundland, said Vancouver police Insp. Laurence Rankin on Wednesday. Officers with the Integrated Riot Investigation Team finally arrested Mahoney at his workplace in Lanigan, Sask. on Tuesday.
He will be flown back to Vancouver to face the charges of participating in a riot, assault, assault with a weapon, and two counts of mischief, said Rankin.
He also announced that police have recommended 200 criminal charges against 50 more rioters, bringing the total to 872 charges against 275 people.
