The issue of allowing foreign-born citizens to run for office has long been an issue south of the border, but what about American-born politicians in Canada?
A recent HuffPost Canada interview with Elizabeth May brought the fact that the Green Party Leader was born in the U.S. to the attention of some of our readers.
Some digging around on Parliament's website reveals that May is far from the only Canadian politician to hail from our southern neighbour. Since Confederation in 1867, 87 MPs elected to the House of Commons have been born in the U.S.
Unlike in the United States, a foreign-born Canadian citizen can lead the country by becoming prime minister. In fact, recent PM John Turner was born in the U.K, as was Sir John A. MacDonald, Alexander Mackenzie and Sir Mackenzie Bowell. No-U.S. born Canadian citizen has served as prime minister.
