Transit Police were dispatched to the New Westminster SkyTrain Station Monday night to investigate the third bomb scare on the transit system since Friday.

The incident began when a man on a bike approached a transit attendant at around 9:30 p.m. and said he found something they'd want to see, News1130 reports.

The man produced a piece of pipe about 14 inches long and wrapped in black tape.

The attendant referred the item to Transit Police, who found a white substance on one end, said spokeswoman Anne Drennan. The matter was referred to the RCMP.

With trains running through the station but not stopping, an RCMP explosives unit arrived to try and detonate the item but officials later determined it wasn't explosive, CTV reported.

Transit Police are now ramping up patrols around SkyTrain stations after two bomb scares on Friday.

One incident saw the RCMP detonate an explosive device that was discovered between the Scott Road and Gateway stations in Surrey. The other incident case did not turn out to a false alarm at Metrotown Station.

Transit Police are drawing on tactics designed by the New York Police Department (NYPD) to sweep for bombs and deter "anti-social behaviour" on SkyTrain cars and stations, the Vancouver Sun reported.
