Vancouver police want to recognize the actions of two mysterious Good Samaritans after they helped stop the sexual assault of a woman on New Year's Day.
Around 4 a.m, a young woman was walking east on Broadway when a man approached and sexually assaulted her. Two men witnessed the incident at a nearby bus stop and came to the woman's rescue, according to a Vancouver police news release. The suspect managed to run away.
The attack happened shortly after the 38-year-old woman was dropped off by a taxi near the intersection of West Broadway and Granville Street on Tuesday.
Though physically uninjured, the woman suffered "a great deal of emotional distress," said Vancouver police Sgt. Randy Fincham.
"These men are great citizens," Fincham told CBC News. "They came forward and scared this suspect away before he could do more harm than he did."
"They should be commended for their actions," said Geoff Gabriel of the Vancouver Police Sex Crimes Unit in a news release.
The suspect is described as white, 6'4", in his 40s with a slender build. He was wearing a shiny, black, fake-leather jacket with dark pants and brown hiking boots.
