An Edmonton man has been charged with drunk driving after he was found slumped over the steering wheel of his car with a child in the backseat, according to the Edmonton Police Service.

A witness reported the incident to police Sunday morning after the man was found passed out in the middle of an intersection near 95A Street and 129B Avenue, with the car still running.

Attempts to wake the man before EPS members arrived on scene failed, said police.

The 39-year-old man also faces charges of blowing over .08 and driving while disqualified.

Recent police statistics show this is not the first time Edmonton police have found a driver asleep at the wheel of a car this year — not even close.

Between Jan. 24 and 28, police say they responded to seven calls where a driver was drunk and sleeping in their car. In total, police laid 59 impaired charges and handed out eight licence suspensions in January
