A Kelowna man who set a friend on fire is heading to jail.
Matthew Sweet-Grant, 20, was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in jail minus time served for setting a drunk friend on fire at a party in December, Castanet.net reported. The judge considered the fact that Sweet-Grant pleaded guilty to the crime and showed remorse.
Judge Anne Wallace said she believed there was no intention to burn the 18-year-old victim, reported B.C. CTV.
Prosecutors initially sought a sentence of six to eight years behind bars for the aggravated assault that left the victim in hospital with second and third-degree burns, News1130 reported.
RCMP said at the time that it Sweet-Grant had set other people on fire before. Sweet-Grant had a Facebook album titled, "Stoned Pyro Bro's [sic]" that showed friends with their clothes in flames. It appeared they were willing participants.
Joshua McWhirter, 18, was also charged with aggravated assault. He pleaded guilty and will be sentenced later this week.
