Although meeting potential partners online isn't the most romantic story to tell, it could be the best way to get to a longer and happier marriage.

Chicago University psychologists studied almost 20,000 people who had married between 2005 and 2012.

Just over a third had met their partner online

The study found that relationships which started online are 25 per cent less likely to end in divorce or separation than those that found each other through friends or chance, according to the Daily Mail.

Also, those who were still married were happier if they had met online.

The sheer number of available potential partners online could be among the reasons for the results, says Professor John Cacioppo, who led the study.

It's also suggested that online daters are more likely to have a second date since they share more information online.

But what is it that makes online dating more successful? Researchers suggest it could be down to a high motivation to find love and the efforts that websites put in to match up partners.
