Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued For Areas Around Calgary, Edmonton

UPDATE: 7:50 p.m. - Environment Canada has ended a tornado warning for Newell County. Several thunderstorm warning and watches remain in effect.

UPDATE: 7:10 p.m. - Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning for Newell County. Tornado warning for the town of Hussar and area including Wheatland County has ended.

UPDATE: 5:40 p.m. - Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning for the town of Hussar and area including Wheatland County.

The weather agency warns that large hail, damaging winds and heavy downpours could affect areas near Calgary and Edmonton, as well as rural towns.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop along the foothills this afternoon and and those storms will continue into the evening.

The areas affected by the watch include:

  • Airdrie, Cochrane, Old and Sundre,
  • The City of Calgary,
  • Drayton Valley, Devon, Pigeon Lake,
  • Drumheller and Three Hills,
  • Hinton and Grande Cache,
  • Nordegg,
  • Red Deer, Ponoka, Innisfail, Stettler,
  • Rocky Mountain House,
  • Spruce Grove, Morinville, Mayerthorpe,
  • Whitecourt, Edson and Swan Hills
