A garbage truck driver escaped serious injury when a large beam fell on his cab at Coquitlam Centre Mall on Friday morning.

The driver with Smithrite Disposal was making a regular pickup at around 8:30 a.m. when he failed to lower the truck's bin and hit a ten-by-four-foot steel and masonry beam, causing it to fall on the cab, Coquitlam Centre marketing director Deborah Stetz told The Province.

The driver called 911 and firefighters attending the scene had to cut him out of the truck, Global News reported. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

There were no other people nearby at the time of the accident. Smithrite was on scene after it happened but did not speak to media.

Police, fire, ambulance and WorkSafeBC officials are assessing the damage to the truck and the beam. The Coquitlam Centre Mall remains open but the west entrance is closed, CBC News reported.
