You would think that being easy on the eyes would make it easier for a woman to advance her career.
Not so for a city councillor in Qazin, Iran.
Despite gaining 10,000 votes in the city's June election and winning a council seat, 27-year-old Nina Siakhali Moradi was barred from from taking up her post on the city council.
Jezebel notes that that Moradj was a "progressive, young engineer who ran on a platform that pushed for better women’s rights and the restoration of the city’s historical sites."
She also happened to be good-looking.
So, what's the problem? Well, according to sources, the councillors (who are most likely all men), think that an attractive woman won't be able to do the job well.
"We don’t want a catwalk model on the council,” a senior official in Qazvin told local press.
Despite already being approved as a candidate and wearing a hijab on her campaign poster, conservative religious groups demanded she be disqualified.
This setback is a blow for Iranian women's civil rights, which new President Hassan Rowhani promised would be improved upon when he ran under the slogan "Young ideas for a young future."
We can't help but wonder: If Nina had hairy moles on her face, would she have been allowed to sit on council?
