Justin Trudeau and the Liberals have released a new TV ad focusing on what is quickly becoming the party's top talking point: stagnating middle class incomes.
Titled #RealPriorities (yes, they seriously used the hashtag), the commercial counters recent Conservative attacks that Trudeau's only focus is on the legalization of marijuana. The ad will debut on TV Monday.
The new spot asserts that the Canadian economy has doubled over the past 30 years while middle class incomes have risen just 15 per cent.
The subject of whether Canada has really seen significant growth in the gap between the middle class and the rich is a subject of fierce economic debate, but the Liberals have clearly identified the issue as one they can hurt the Conservatives with.
The party recently recruited former journalist Chrystia Freeland, who has written widely on income inequality, to run for them in an upcoming byelection in Toronto and Trudeau regularly attacks the Tories on middle class issues during public appearances.
This is the second time Trudeau has used a chalkboard setting for an ad, a reference to his work as a teacher. In both commercials, Trudeau opens with a brief rebuke of the Tories before jumping into his own arguments.
