Creston Valley artist Guy Hobbs has been named the B.C. Wildlife Federation's 2014 Artist of the Year.

Hobbs won the title for "All He Surveys," his stunning painting of a bald eagle. A jury selected three finalists from over 30 submissions and then voted on a winner at a convention last April.

Born in England, Hobbs is a self-taught artist who has been creating wildlife art for only three years, reports Castlegar News.

“It’s been a really interesting learning process,” he told the paper. “I was working exclusively in colouring pencil and I hit a road block. I’ve always said I’ve become a wildlife artist to cover up the fact that I’m a really mediocre wildlife photographer!"

"Winter's Wolf," another piece by Hobbs, has been selected to be part of this year's Ducks Unlimited Canada National Art Portfolio, the artist told The Huffington Post B.C. in an email.

"I try to capture life," he said in a news release. "It is the most important thing for me. Life is so diverse and so perfect and when I start looking at it as an artist, it blows my mind. The placement of every feather or hair is unique and perfectly adapted — it is the ultimate in design."
