The RCMP is investigating homemade hot dogs stuffed with pills that were left on a rural road popular with people walking their dogs in Courtenay, B.C.

Someone found the food along Headquarters Road and turned it into the B.C. SPCA on Wednesday, reported CBC News.

Neighbours told CTV News that someone has been complaining recently about a stray dog and posted signs about it.

The SPCA found about four white pills inside each hot dog, which appear to be homemade, reported Global News.

Leon Davis, B.C. SPCA Nanaimo & District manager, said he suspects the tainted hot dogs and the posters are linked.

The SPCA has asked a pharmacist to help identify the pills, said CBC. The RCMP has taken over the case, according to CTV.

"Not only other dogs going along and eating these pills and becoming sick, but there could be other animals, wildlife, children. So we wanted to warn the public," said Davis.

Davis said SPCA staff are checking the surrounding area for more tainted meat.
