'Speakers' Corner' Back, In A Manner Of Speaking (VIDEO)

IT'S BACK.. Kinda

Got something to say? Got a bone to pick? "Speakers' Corner" wants to hear it!

The popular brand is returning to CityNews, though not quite the way you remember it, said a news release.

For those who didn't watch MuchMusic in the '90s, "Speakers' Corner" was an edgy show that ran from 1990 to 2008. It invited anyone to air their views in a booth (think telephone booth with plexiglass doors) at the music station's headquarters at Queen and John Streets in Toronto.

You could drop a loonie in a slot and unload anything that was on your mind, with a chance of appearing on TV.

City won't bring back the booth, but it will re-launch the brand after CityVote 2014, the first debate of the Toronto mayoral election, to be held on March 26.

Once the broadcast is finished, viewers will be invited to submit "Speakers' Corner" videos offering their views on the debate and the election. You can submit using any method you want, from Vine to Instagram to e-mail, Dave Budge, general manager for CityNews, told Marketing Magazine.

A selection of submissions will be used on the CityNews and 680News websites and some may even be incorporated into TV broadcasts.

The return isn't exactly being embraced by people who remember the booth.

"It seems like a foregone conclusion that this new version won’t be as good, if only because YouTube exists now," wrote Toronto Life's Steve Kupferman.

"But we can hope."
