Lawrence Hong, Calgary Stabbing Victim, Remembered As Generous Volunteer

Generous Volunteer, Lover Of Food

Lawrence Hong, one of five victims in a fatal stabbing spree at a Calgary house party on Tuesday, is being remembered as an avid foodie who dedicated his time to helping others.

The 27-year-old urban studies student was set to graduate from the University of Calgary this year. He had previously served as vice-president of finance for the Urban Calgary Students' Association, said a news release from the school.

Hong was also a volunteer with the Calgary Folk Music Festival and Fairy Tales Film Festival.

Folk festival organizers tweeted a statement mourning Hong on Wednesday:

"The staff of the Calgary Folk Music Festival were devastated to learn that Lawrence Hong, a volunteer on our dispatch crew was a victim in (Tuesday's) stabbings," said a statement written by volunteer manager Talia Potter.

"Our condolences go out to all those who knew Lawrence, particularly the members of the dispatch crew and his family."

Friends said Hong, who was one week away from his 28th birthday, loved food and enjoyed cooking.

"I remember sitting there, and he’d be so excited he’d be taking pictures of all of our food," Hong's best friend, Cristofer Chan, told the Calgary Herald.

"He liked to make things like lamb racks and prosciutto pizzas. He liked to cook with his friends. He was a foodie."

Hong was variously described as "sweet," "social" and "kind," Calgary Herald reporter Amanda Stephenson tweeted.
